Excerpt from Catalogue of the Officers and Students of Boston College: For the Academic Year 1875-76 The hours of attendance are from 85 A. M. To 25 P. M with recesses at convenient intervals. On Saturdays, schools close at 1 P. M. And on eves of festivals of obligation, at 12 M. The first half-hour of each day is occupied in the celebration of Mass. One hour a day is spent in the class of Arithmetic, or Mathematics; two hours a week in the study of Modern Lan guages the rest of the time is allotted to the principal class, that of English, Latin and Greek. The Fathers of the Society of Jesus, by whom the College is conducted, have for object to impart a religious, classical and scientific education. The Act of Incorporation provides that no student in said Col lege shall be refused admission to, or denied any of the privileges, honors, or degrees of said College on account of the religious opin ions he may entertain. Students who are not Catholics will not be required to participate in any exercise distinctively Catholic, nor will any undue influence be used to induce a change of religious belief. Catholic students will be required to hear Mass every day, unless distance of residence should furnish reason for exemption; to recite the daily catechetical lesson to attend the weekly lecture on the doctrines of the Church, and the annual retreat; to present themselves to their confessor every month; and if they have never received the sacraments of Penance, Confirmation, or Holy Eucha rist, to prepare for their reception. On admission, the pupil is examined, to determine what classes he should enter. Subsequent progress in the course will depend altogether upon his progress in learning From the inequality of preparation found in students entering, detention for more than a year in the lowest classes is of frequent occurrence. And from inequality of proficiency in the several branches, it often happens that all the classes a scholar attends do not belong to the same year; for example, that his class of 'mathematics may be ofthe fourth year, whilst in his principal class (by which his position in the course is determined) he is rated as of the fifth.
