This 2007 version of the book was the last version published. For partial updates, please visit Aaron Shepard's Publishing Page. Please note also that the Word versions described in this book possessed an earlier interface as well as features better suited to print publishing. Nowadays, new technologies and services have made it easier than ever to publish your book, but there's one question you may still face: Do I need an expensive page layout program, or can I just use a word processor like Microsoft Word? With this book as guide, you'll soon be producing pages from Word that no reviewer will scoff at. //////////////////////////////////////////////// Aaron Shepard is a foremost proponent of the new business of profitable self publishing through print on demand, which he has practiced and helped develop since 1998. Unlike most authorities on self publishing, he makes the bulk of his living from his self-published books -- not from consulting, speaking, freelance writing, or selling publishing services. In a parallel life, Aaron is an award-winning children's author with numerous books from publishers large and small. //////////////////////////////////////////////// "If you want to make your layout and formatting as unproblematic as possible and you don't want to shell out $1-$2k for someone else to do it for you, then add this book to your library. . . . Using this book, I've found page layout pretty fun and now look forward to that part of the process." -- Zoe Winter, Indie Books Journal (blog of IndieReader.com), Apr. 12, 2010 "If you want to use MS Word for typesetting, you really, really should own a copy of Aaron Shepard's book Perfect Pages. Nobody knows more about making Word produce acceptably typeset books." -- Walt Shiel, From the Publisher's Desk, Aug. 27, 2007 "If you are a self-publisher, the biggest favour you can possibly do for yourself is to learn how to present your work to its best possible advantage. And in that regard, Aaron Shepard is an invaluable aid." -- Michael Allen, Grumpy Old Bookman, Apr. 17, 2007 "Excellent not only as a guide to using Word to design books, but also as a concise guide to book design." -- Morris Rosenthal, author, Print-on-Demand Book Publishing "On target . . . . The self-publisher's bible! In this clear and entertaining ten-step guide, now in its eighth edition, a prolific American author tells how he formats his books using free software for upload to online bookstores. The secret, he explains, is to use the universal "epub" format to create a single e-book file that will be accepted by every digital retailer, from Amazon.com through Barnes & Noble, the Apple iBookstore, and smaller booksellers like the Canada-based Kobo. "Most beginners write their books in Word or Open Office," Notjohn says, "and then they up to upload the same document for conversion to an e-book. Sometimes it works; more often it doesn't, because these programs litter the file with hidden formatting. The result can be a disaster." Instead, the word-processing document should be converted to clean HTML, the markup language used to create a web page. (All e-books are web pages at heart, and the Kindle and other e-book readers are just special-purpose web browsers.) The conversion from document to HTML file takes seconds. It can then be plugged into a simple template that Notjohn includes in this Guide and also makes available on his blog for anyone to use. He also supplies a style sheet to format the book for best appearance on the Kindle, Fire tablet, the various Kindle apps, as well as on competing tablets and e-book readers. If all else fails, there's Plan B: a stripped-down template for novels and for non-fiction that consists mostly of text. He concludes with a chapter on how best to present your e-book on the Kindle platform, with hints on encrypting the book, copyrighting it, and pricing it for the greatest return. And new this year: a chapter on adapting the e-book to a print edition. With illustrations and screenshots. Revised and updated 2017edition.

2nd Edition: EXTENDED! REVISED! UPDATED!Publishing a print book with Createspace or Lulu is fairly easy. But unless you know how to lay out a book, AND how to achieve the results you want in your word processor, the result won't do your writing justice. In this guide, I will show you how to format your book's interior: * What you need to know about book layout and typesetting to get professional results.* How to use Microsoft Word 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 & 2013 to achieve those results (with notes for Word 2003 users) * eBook tips: how to format your manuscript in Word so you can move easily between print, Kindle, ePUB, and Smashwords editions. (Note: this is not a comprehensive guide to building eBooks). *NEW! A workflow for publishing a book through Createspace. Follow the workflow and use the cross-references to find the detailed discussion later in the book for each step. *NEW! Answers to the questions about paperback publishing that I am often asked by my book-formatting clients, such as: how to pick the right trim size, how to set pricing, what kind of ISBN you should use, and how to link print and kindle editions on Amazon.*NEW! The correct way to use paragraph and page breaks in Word.*NEW! Advanced topics: add that final level of polish with subjects such as kerning & OpenType settings, using Unicode code points in paperbacks and eBooks, dot gain & color spaces, faux glyphs and how to avoid them, the perils of transferring Word files between Mac & Windows, and how to republish your back catalog.*NEW! Many more screenshots and diagrams (now 76). All are reproduced in the paperback and eBook editions of this book, and are also available from the book's website.A note for Mac users. Screenshots are taken from Windows editions of Word, and references made to any significant Mac differences (specifically: keyboard shortcut differences, selecting fonts, and the PDF print capability built into OS X). While I have worked with Mac users to research the second edition, in the interest of honesty I declare that although I have laid out dozens of paperback books using Windows editions of Word, I have not produced any using a Mac. Hence there is a Windows-first bias to the text and images.
