Excerpt from Blue Earth County, Minnesota, in the World War: The Story of Blue Earth County's Part in the Great Struggle for Democracy That other generations might possess From shame and menace free in years to come A richer heritage of happiness, He marched to that heroic martyrdom. Esteeming less the forfeit that he paid Than undishonored that his flag might float Over the towers of liberty, he made His breast the bulwark and his blood the moat. With the centennial of the First World War rapidly approaching, historian and bibliographer James T. Controvich offers in The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference bibliography yet published. Organized by subject, this bibliography includes the full range of sources: vintage publications of the time, books, pamphlets, periodical titles, theses, dissertations, and archival sources held by federal and state organizations, as well as those in public and private hands, including historical societies and museums. As Controvich’s bibliographic accounting makes clear, there were many facets of World War I that remain virtually unknown to this day. Throughout, Controvich’s bibliography tracks the primary sources that tell each of these stories—and many others besides—during this tense period in American history. Each entry lists the author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, and page count as well as descriptive information concerning illustrations, plates, ports, maps, diagrams, and plans. The armed forces section carries additional information on rosters, awards, citations, and killed and wounded in action lists. The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide is an ideal research tool for students and scholars of World War I and American history.

Twenty years after the guns of the American Civil War fell silent at Appomattox in 1865, Women's Relief Corps members of Mankato's Alexander Wilkin Post, Grand Army of the Republic, persuaded the City of Mankato to purchase the triangular blood of land, owned by W.H. Shepard, at the intersection of Broad, Grove, and Lincoln Streets in Mankato, for the express purpose of erecting a Civil War veteran's memorial on that site. The monument, known as The Boy in Blue, was built in 1892, and dedicated on May 30, 1893. Although it seems obvious that a memorial of this historical significance should long endure -- that was not the case. The Boy in Blue only lasted for thirty-five years, becoming the victim of neglect, senseless vandalism and the ravages of extreme weather conditions. It would have remained this way, had it not been for renewed interest in the Civil War era, on the occasion of the conflict's sesquicentennial commemoration; coupled with the efforts of a small, but determined group of local citizens, whose goal it was to restore the Boy in Blue to its former glory by reconstructing not only the statue, but the pedestal and fountain pool as well. This book serves as a chronicle of their dedicated efforts, as well as a tribute to all of those who contributed their time, talents and financial resources to make the dream of re-creating Mankato's oldest war memorial a reality.
