Excerpt from Birds and Their Nests The birds in these pictures of ours have all nests, which is as it should be; for how could the bird rear its young without its little home and soft little bed, any more than children could be comfortably brought up without either a bed to lie upon, or a home in which to be happy. Excerpt from Britain's Birds and Their Nests Under each plate is given the ordinary English name of the species, the place which it occupies in the system of classification followed in the text, and two measure ments to give an idea of the scale on which the bird is drawn. These are (1) the length in inches from the tip of the beak to the tip of the tail; (2) the length from the carpal joint (the shoulder' of the wing) to the quill-tips - the greatest length of the wing when measured in the position of rest. The figures are average measure ments for adult males according to a standard authority. In most species the females are slightly smaller. Great disparity, or differences in the reverse direction, are usually mentioned in the text. The purpose of the text is to give in popular language an account of the natural history of British breeding birds, considered as such. The list is complete, and in cludes birds which nest only exceptionally in our islands, or which formerly nested here but no longer do so. Birds only suspected of having nested in Britain are mentioned within brackets under the head of some allied species. The birds receiving lengthy treatment correspond roughly to those to which plates have been allotted; but items of special interest or importance, and the inclusion or omission of near relatives, have been important factors in determining whether a species should be fully de scribed or not. It is explained (on p. 227) why the descriptions of the birds of the great Order, Passeres. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Nests and Eggs of American Birds The robin is distributed in the breeding season over the whole United States., excepting the extreme south, and over the most of British America. Everywhere it is one of the earliest birds to nestle, and in the southern part of its range raises two or more broods in a season. In the middle states the robins have paired by April 1, and have begun to build their homes before the middle of the month. As far north as Detroit, fresh eggs are to be had the second and third weeks of April in abundance, while even on the upper Missouri and at Puget Sound, the first broods of young are out early in June, and a second brood prepared for. The situation of the nest is extremely varied, and little concealment seems to be attempted. A fork, or the upper surface of a large limb, in an old orchard tree or garden evergreen, is a favorite site; but woodland trees, the protruding end of a fence-rail, the top of a pillar, a stimp, the ground or a ledge of rocks, the interior of a well, the ribs of a fossil megatherium in a college cabinet, the broken-out hole of a woodpecker or squirrel, or even a bush in the midst of a colony of noisy blackbirds, have all been frequently occupied. Occasionally they will build in companies, as in a case at Danvers, Mass., where fully a dozen pairs built their nests on the plate which supported the rafters of a kiln-house. Excerpt from How We Went Birds'-Nesting: Field, Wood and Meadow Rambles Perhaps overhead in the verandah, or in a brace of your wood-shed or corn-barn or any out-building; but certainly under a bridge. There was not a bridge in all that region where we did not find one - and never but one. I said we, but my companion, being timid about water, shirked that part of our undertaking. So it became with me a matter of determination never to miss a single bridge - and the country hereabouts abounds with them, so many are the mountain brooks; besides, I wanted to know from actual sight whether every bridge had its nest, and to see how nearly alike the nests were, all of which I accomplished. I also found that there was never but one bird to be seen - one lonely pewee in that dusky retreat above the plashing water, blooding patiently over the eggs, while the mate was abroad who knows where? Excerpt from The Nests and Eggs of Indian Birds, Vol. 1 I have long regretted my inability to issue a revised edition of 'Nests and Eggs.' For many years after the first Rough Draft appeared, I went on laboriously accumulating materials for a re-issue, but subsequently circumstances prevented my undertaking the work. Now, fortunately, my friend Mr. Eugene Oates has taken the matter up, and much as I may personally regret having to hand over to another a task, the performance of which I should so much have enjoyed, it is some consolation to feel that the readers, at any rate, of this work will have no cause for regret, but rather of rejoicing that the work has passed into younger and stronger hands. One thing seems necessary to explain. The present Edition does not include quite all the materials I had accumulated for this work. Many years ago, during my absence from Simla, a servant broke into my museum and stole thence several cwts. of manuscript, which he sold as waste paper. This manuscript included more or less complete life-histories of some 700 species of birds, and also a certain number of detailed accounts of nidification.
