This bibliography continues and updates previously issued reports by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories information centers on fibers, fiber-reinforced composites, as well as laminate, particulate, and eutectic composite materials. No organic matrix composites or fibers are included. This edition includes 2367 literature references published between January 1972 and September 1978. The references are arranged alphabetically according to author's last name or the name of the organization concerned and chronologically by year of publication. The subject categorization of this edition is similar to that used in the earlier bibliographies. References pertaining only to fibers are indexed as (1) general reviews; (2) growth, forming, or surface treatments; and/or (3) test methods and structural properties. Entries relating to composites are broadly indexed according to matrix materials and specifically by fiber materials. Composites are also indexed (at least once) in the following areas: (1) compatibility studies; (2) theory, analysis, micromechanics, and design; (3) testing and evaluation; (4) application; (5) general review articles; (6) fabrication; and (7) coatings. The report includes both an authors index and a subject index. (Author).

The bibliography contains over 3000 references, including translated items from Japan, West Germany, U.S.S.R., and other countries as well as references of original English language publications of the United States and United Kingdom. The references are categorized by specific fiber and matrix materials. In addition, many references are grouped in the general categories of compatibility studies, theory and design, testing and evaluation, application, and fabrication. A group of references to general review articles is included. The references represent the holdings of the former Defense Ceramic Information Center (DCIC) plus those of the Fibers and Composites Center (FCIC) at Battelle's Columbus Laboratories and MCIC. The problem of developing metal matrix (MCM) and metal-polymer (MPCM) composite materials is one of the most important in present day materials technology, for its solution is pivotal to the development of a number of leading technologies. The development of new fibrous and lamellar composite materials with improved physico-chemical, electrical, thermal and other properties is a springboard for qualitative scientific and technological advances not only in aerospace and shipbuilding technologies, but also in mechanical, power, electronic, electrical, radio engineering, transport, construction and other industries. The volume reviews the results of research programmes ac complished in recent years by Soviet scientists in the development of composite materials based on aluminium and magnesium matrices, polymatrix composites (composite materials) with metal and polymeric matrices reinforced with boron and carbon fibres, steel wire, fibre glass and other fillers. The volume also reviews present-day physico-chemical fundamen tals and basic principles for developing and optimizing metal matrix composites, and describes the most expedient and efficient methods of MCM and MPCM manufacturing. Special attention is devoted to the issue of manufacturing MCM structural members, and their machin ing and plastic working, as well as to coupling techniques.
