Excerpt from Illustrated Catalogue of a Remarkable Collection of Beautiful Old Chinese Porcelains, Rare Specimens of Ancient Pottery, Ancient Sculptures in Stone, Superb Imperial Velvet Throne Carpets, Choice Old Chinese Rugs, and Many Beautiful Old Snuff Bottles: The Collection Formed By, and to Be Sold at Unrestricted Public Sale by Order Of, the Connoisseur Mr. H. A. E. Jaehne of New York City Mr. Jaehne resided in the Orient for over seventeen years, during which time this collection was gradually formed. It is very difficult to find and secure rare objects of Chinese art in China itself, as the pieces are usually heirlooms that are parted with only under great duress of Circumstances; for the Chinese well know the artistic and intrinsic value of their possessions, and themselves pay enormous prices for rare and choice examples. Here one can trace the development of the potter's art in China from the slightly fired, unglazed gray clay ware, through the glazed pottery, early stoneware and porcellanous stoneware on to the tech nical perfection of porcelain in the eighteenth century. In bronze are examples of the Chou and Han dynasties showing the archaic superseded by the early naturalistic treatment, and the various phases through which the artists in that medium have passed up to modern times.
