In this highly informative book -- The perfect gift for Father's Day & Birthdays columnist Bard Lindeman writes an open letter to men who are growing older and feel the pressure.Lindeman believes that Americans do not understand the aging process. Rather than embracing this stage of their lives, they kneel at the altar of youth to worship the ideals of perpetually abundant hair and unwrinkled skin. Why waste your time, Lindeman asks, when you can be an outrageous older man? With warmth and wit, Lindeman covers the areas of most concern to men -- and the women who love them: health, work (is retirement a good idea or a failed experiment?), loneliness, sexuality (You bet there's sex after 50 ), meeting new people, and advocacy. Who else will stand up for the rights of older people if we don't? he asks.Be an Outrageous Older Man is based on Lindeman's personal experiences, the research behind fourteen years of his nationally syndicated, twice-weekly newspaper column In Your Prime, and the hundreds of letters and cards he's received from his readers. He knows, because his readers have told him, that older men are incredible grandfathers, and that volunteering makes them feel good.He also knows older men believe in the benefits of regular exercise but fear losing their hair, and having problems with their prostate.Be an Outrageous Older Man is not a how-to-live-longer book. Like Be an Outrageous Older Woman by Dr. Ruth Jacobs (also published by KIT), this volume tells men how to feel better about aging. A lifelong journalist, Lindeman says Aging is, by far, the best story I've ever covered. It's always news because information on the topic constantly changes and evolves.Americans are just beginning to see the profound impact of aging on our society.

"He loads his head full of coal and diamonds shoot out of his finger tips. What a trick. The mole genius has left us with another digest. It's a full house--read 'em and weep."--Tom Waits After toiling in obscurity for years, Charles Bukowski suddenly found fame in 1967 with his autobiographical newspaper column, "Notes of a Dirty Old Man," and a book of that name in 1969. He continued writing this column, in one form or another, through the mid-1980s. More Notes of a Dirty Old Man gathers many uncollected gems from the column's twenty-year run. Drawn from ephemeral underground publications, these stories and essays haven't been seen in decades, making More a valuable addition to Bukowski's oeuvre. Filled with his usual obsessions--sex, booze, gambling--More features Bukowski's offbeat insights into politics and literature, his tortured, violent relationships with women, and his lurid escapades on the poetry reading circuit. Highlighting his versatility, the book ranges from thinly veiled autobiography to purely fictional tales of dysfunctional suburbanites, disgraced politicians, and down-and-out sports promoters, climaxing with a long, hilarious adventure among French filmmakers, "My Friend the Gambler," based on his experiences making the movie Barfly. From his lowly days at the post office through his later literary fame, More follows the entire arc of Bukowski's colorful career. Edited by Bukowski scholar David Stephen Calonne, More Notes of a Dirty Old Man features an afterword outlining the history of the column and its effect on the author's creative development. Born in Andernach, Germany in 1920, Charles Bukowski came to California at age three and spent most of his life in Los Angeles. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994.

"The Old Man veers between a contemporary effort to buy a dacha and the memories of an incident during the Civil War. A questionable action in the past haunts the present and throws into relief the materialism that has come to replace revolutionary idealism; by suggesting that this idealism may have been tainted in the first place, Trifonov implicitly blames the past for the ills of the present. While the setting and situation are very Soviet, the quandary Trifonov describes has universal significance." --Book Jacket.

My father failed to pull out in time and so my twin and I were conceived. The year was 1936, the great depression was showing little sign of ending and my father had been out of work for a long time. About the last thing my parents needed was an additional child, much less twins. Still, call it fate, pre-determinism, or simply a reluctance to terminate their carnal pleasure in a timely manner. In any event the population of our country increased by two. I would like to say, the world as a result was forever changed; however unless my twin or I accomplish something really worthwhile in the very near future, it would probably be a bit of an over statement. Not-with-standing it would be fair to say, I for one never regretted being born and never really sympathized entirely with my parent's dismay at this event.

I have nothing against snakes, provided that they’re hundreds of miles away from me. And I have nothing against my dad, given the same set of conditions. In a fit of questionable judgment, consummate indoorsman John Sellers tags along on a journey to search for snakes with his eccentric, aging father—an obsessive fan of Bob Dylan, a giver of terrible gifts, a drinker of boxed wine, a minister- turned-heretic, and, most importantly, the self-designated guardian of the threatened copperbelly water snake. The quest is their fumbling attempt to reconnect. Decades of bitterness, substance abuse, acrimonious divorce, and divergent opinions about personal hygiene have conspired to make the two estranged. Sellers has just begun to develop a new appreciation for the American wilderness, and all the slithering creatures that populate it, when his father’s deteriorating health thwarts their mission and disturbs their tentative peace. Determined to finish what they started, he ventures back into the swamp— alone, but more connected to his dad than ever. With big-hearted humor and irreverence, The Old Man and the Swamp tells the story of a father who always lived on his own terms and the son who struggled to make sense of it all.

This is the story of PFC Raymond Oblinger, an American replacement soldier in the U.S. Army in WWII. Part One takes the reader through the vigorous infantry training in the US, across the Atlantic and into the well-organized replacement system and ultimately into a cold, damp foxhole in France where Ray experienced his baptism of fire in the form of incoming enemy mortar fire. Part Two covers Rays next 5 months in combat with the US 26th Infantry Division in the campaigns of Lorraine in northern France, the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), and the Rhineland. Part Three moves through the US Armys medical care in Europe, and the vast demobilization process. Ray and the reader are finally brought homeward bound and given an Honorable Discharge where Life After Olive Drab is lived until Rays death in 1985. The reader will experience not only the horrors and hardships of war, but also the occasional humor in it.
