A research program was conducted to determine the causes of variability in GAU-7/A telescoped ammunition featuring molded grain propellant and a combustible case. The approach to the problem took the form of a coordinated analytical/experimental effort. a computer simulation of the GAU-7/A round was formulated, coded, debugged, validated and used to help determine the sensitivity of ammunition parameters. The experimental effort generated empirical inputs and functions for use in the model as well as defining and providing insight into the variability problem. The results of this program indicate that (1) inconsistent grain breakup (primarily the aft grain), (2) poorly performing and variable ignition components, and (3) interaction of these with a combustible case and other components easily influenced by moisture are primary contributors to GAU-7/A telescoped ammunition performance variability. What Is Telescoped Ammunition The term "telescoped ammunition" refers to a kind of projectile that is either partly or entirely encased by the propellant in the construction of the ammunition. To provide just one example, there is ammunition designed for both hand weapons and artillery. Telescoping is often used for caseless ammunition. The T-34-85 tank is one of those rare weapons that have remained in service for more than half a century. First introduced in 1944, it has seen combat in nearly every corner of the globe. Steven Zaloga and Jim Kinnear look at this long-serving tank at length. Although long obsolete in Europe, it has proven a reliable and potent weapon in many Third World conflicts, and is still in service with more than a dozen armies around the world.
