PERSONAL TESTIMONY UNDERSTANDING FEARTen years old my brother Isaac was 8 both of us on the floor underneath our bed...Then we heard shots BANG! BANG! Then an explosion, then another! We heard the cries, the screaming of wounded people. The more we heard the more profound the fear that remained in our hearts, then again the loud shots and more explosions. It was 1960 in the country of Cuba. Fidel Castro had gathered his revolutionaries and attacked innocent families that were opposing his communistic regime. We had been told by our parents to take refuge underneath our beds...so we obeyed! Fear had entered our hearts and fear was a way of life. In those days my family had very little options to survive, we opposed the communistic government way of life so we were oppressed hastily by Castro's men. Dad's job was confiscated and my mom as well. My brother who was 8 years old and I were kicked out of the school system. The family was now to survive by the generosity of the family line and friends. Fear to survive was a daily application. The tenacity of my parents allowed us to reverse fear with a win at all cost attitude. Daily we visited friends of the family and they always had something to eat for my younger brother Isaac, Lili, and myself. Our goal was to reverse the fear and the terrorist's tactics of the Government with FAITH.

The Bible plays a vital role in the life of the Catholic Church. In fact, we are called to immerse ourselves daily in the Scriptures. But many of us get lost when we actually dive into the Bible, and our time spent can be more frustrating than fruitful. We are reading a collection of writings drafted by an ancient people, in an ancient culture. But Scripture is nothing less than the Living Word of God, and it is meant just as much for us as for those who lived thousands of years ago. In Walking with God, Dr. Tim Gray and Jeff Cavins unpack the central story woven throughout Scripture and present it in an easy-to-read, concise manner. Gray and Cavins take you on a journey through the “narrative” books of the Bible—the ones that tell the story—and present a panoramic view of God’s glorious plan of salvation. Their expert commentary dives deep into the mysteries of Scripture, unlocking its riches and showing how these inspired words are meant for you today. Enter into the Scriptures with Walking with God. Witness the fascinating story of our faith unfold, and see how you, at this moment in your life, fit into God’s plan for all of humanity. Nothing captivates the human heart like a good story, and the best story of all is the one authored by God Himself in Scripture. With keen insight and a genius for making the complex simple, Gray and Cavins help us see the big picture of God’s Word by guiding us through the depths and compelling details of the biblical narrative. This book is an invaluable guide to the mystery and meaning of Sacred Scripture." Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Denver "For ordinary Catholics, taking a journey through the Bible just got a whole lot easier. With this book, Walking with God, Tim Gray and Jeff Cavins make it so that you are starting out on the trip with a good map and compass, along with a couple of great friends as reliable guides. You don’t want to miss out on such a great adventure." Scott Hahn, Ph.D. Founder and President, St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology "Faced with contentious questions, ancient cultures, and obscure scholarship, it is easy to forget that the Bible is meant to be heard, read, and prayed by all of us. Dr. Tim Gray and Jeff Cavins offer a highly readable overview of the biblical narrative that is very helpful for the average Catholic to explore the wonders of the Bible. They incorporate modern scholarship without being stuffy and ancient wisdom without being obtuse." Fr. Patrick Brady, S.S.L., S.T.D. If you know God loves your work, you can--as Paul put it--"work at it with all your heart." But too often even Christians find it hard to engage fully with what occupies them for hours every day. This book will help you relate your work to God's eternal kingdom purposes. Here you will find not just one or two but several biblical reasons for getting up and going to work. During your lifetime you will spend, perhaps, 100,000 hours working in paid or unpaid work. Will you see spiritual significance in those hours? In the end, will they really matter? These easy-to-read chapters will help you view your daily work within a new and much larger perspective. For example, what if you were to begin seeing your work as a worship offering that God gladly receives? Or what if you were to discover how he intends to use your work to further your own spiritual growth? Get set to move from "Thank God, it's Friday!" to "Wonderful, it's Monday again!"

Why is it so difficult to live the way the Bible teaches? Why don't things work out when we try to be truly holy? Why does the world give us so many problems? If you've struggled with these kinds of questions, there are answers. Walk the path of Spiritual Restoration. You will discover that our frustration and confusion often comes from our Greek worldview. God has a completely different perspective, but if we try to live with one foot in the Greek world and one foot in the Hebrew world, we feel compartmentalize, fragmented and defeated. We have unconsciously worked against ourselves by trying to make God fit the Greek model. All of that can change today! Spiritual Restoration reveals the startling differences between these worldviews. Now we can begin recovery and restoration where living the biblical worldview makes sense for what we need today. Author, teacher and consultant, Skip Moen has five degrees including a Ph.D. from Oxford University. With more than twenty-five years of business entrepreneurial development, Skip provides consulting that helps organizations align their leadership and operations with Biblical principles. He is the Dean of the Department of Biblical Leadership at Master's International Divinity School and the author of Words to Lead By, a study of Jesus' leadership. Skip achieved the American dream of independent wealth only to discover a life of pointless affluence. God radically changed his direction, exposing the myth of security in a Greek-based culture. Now he wants to recover the foundation of God's point of view for living. Subscribers to his web site (www.atgodstable.com) receive a daily word study focused on personal application of the depth of God's word. His articles on business, ethics, theology and personal commitment have appeared in many periodicals.

Reading the Old Testament can seem like exploring an old, mysterious mansion, packed with of all sorts of strange rooms. The creation room, vast and sublime. The exodus room, with hardhearted pharaohs and dried-up seas. The war room, with bloody swords and crumbling walls. The tabernacle room, with smoking altars and dark inner sanctums. What does this odd and ancient world have to do with us, who are modern followers of Jesus? As it turns out, everything! Every chapter in the Old Testament, in a variety of ways, tells the story that culminates in Jesus the Messiah. What Christians today call the Old Testament is what Jesus and the earliest believers simply called the Scriptures. That was their Bible. From its pages, they taught about the Messiah's divine nature, his priestly work, his ministry of salvation. The Christ Key will reintroduce readers to these old books as ever-fresh, ever-new testimonies of Jesus. By the end, you will see even Leviticus as a book of grace and mercy, and you will hear in the Psalms the resounding voice of Christ.

The book of Joshua has many inconsistencies and tensions. The author's analysis of the two plots in the book of Joshua challenges the reader to consider the tensions between dogma and life as it was experienced when the book was written. L. Daniel Hawk draws upon contemporary theories of plot (Kermode, Ricoeur, and especially Brooks) to understand Joshua. He pays special attention to the dynamic quality of the text and of the act of reading. He uncovers patterns of coherence and dissonance that work through and develop the primary concerns of Joshua: the obedience of Israel and the integrity of its land and people. In this valuable book, new ground is broken in the study of the book of Joshua.

How does Jesus, and the ancient Scriptures he held sacred, help us get our bearings in this multifarious, complicated, conflicted, and increasingly endangered planet? First, seek theological insight that can guide our practice. In Navigating the Meanings of Being a Christian, Mark Deleaney invites us on his journey of theological reflection twenty years after his certainties were shaken by a life-changing encounter in an Indian slum. In Evangelism in a Pluralist Society, Ross Farley applies his experience of evangelism in sensitive contexts to a careful review of evangelism in the New Testament and finds that what we call evangelism bears little relationship to the Gospel and Acts. On the subject of HIV epidemics, Greg Manning and Dave Andrews have joined the struggle to reduce HIV infection rates and witnessed the stigmatization of vulnerable people based on misapplied Christian moral teaching. In Supporting HIV Prevention as People of Faith, they consider the Sermon on the Mount as a valuable framework for dealing sensitively and effectively with people vulnerable to HIV infection. Second, critically reflect on possible distortions that come from our own perspectives. In his essay Liberation Theologians Speak to Evangelicals, Charles Ringma shows how Liberation Theologians can shed light on the inadequacies of the evangelical movement in its perspective on God's love for the poor. Helen Beazley's essay Antidote for a Poisoned Planet? examines whether stewardship--the dominant framework informing evangelical perspectives on the environment--can alone radically reorient Christians in their relationship to creation so necessary for its renewal. Third, look for the challenges in the Bible that critique our current orientations and call us to be reconverted. In An Evangelical Approach to Interfaith Engagement, Dave Andrews takes one of our most precious articles of exclusive faith, Jesus is the Way, and makes it a framework for inclusive interfaith dialogue by exploring the Way that Jesus in the Gospels advocated engaging with people from other traditions and religions. In Australia--Whose Land? Peter Adams allows himself to be utterly transformed by the Bible's clear ethical teaching, which, he convincingly argues, must be applied in all its fullness to the injustice of Europeans towards indigenous Australians.

From AI to the Anthropocene, technological power has pushed human life to the limits. It's at those limits that we're faced again with the questions of who we are and how we should live. What if a study of the soil, the humus from which humanity came, could shed light on our condition? What if attending to the soil could teach us something about how we should live? In The Art of Being a Creature, Ragan Sutterfield explores these questions in conversation with the ground. Turning a compost pile while meditating on kenosis or reflecting on St. Bernard while examining fungal hyphae, Sutterfield seeks to recover the practice of humility by looking at the humus. The path toward being fully human, he finds, is not to be discovered through a spiritual seeking in the heavens, but through a pilgrimage to the soil beneath our feet. Anyone who reads The Art of Being a Creature will never see the soil, or their life upon it, the same again.
