While the basic working principle and the mechanical construction of automatic transmissions has not changed significantly, increased requirements for performance, fuel economy, and drivability, as well as the increasing number of gears has made it more challenging to design the systems that control modern automatic transmissions. The scope and purpose of this SAE Recommended Practice is to provide a standard pattern or sequence for the manual control of automatic transmissions in passenger cars and light-duty trucks. This generally refers to left hand drive mechanical shift applications. This document is published as Stabilize The J915 content is not fully compliant with current industry developments and as such, may require a different standard.The content within the J915 standard relies on Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 102 and 114. Portions of the J915 standard that are unique may not represent current common practices within the user community. When this standard was initially published, it reflected a common philosophy towards automatic transmission manual controls sequence. Since that time, changing technologies like self-driving cars, satellite controlled driven cars and electric cars may have led members of the user community to have potentially divergent methods for manual controls sequences of automatic transmissions beyond the minimum requirements specified within the applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. As a result, a different standard may be required.

The aim of this report is to provide a detailed overview of Automated Manual Transmissions (AMT) from its control point of view. An introduction about AMT is given, stating its main advantages in terms of cost and efficiency compared to other transmission types and justifying the context which makes AMT an interesting system for investigation. It is stated as well its importance for the Ford Focus prototype vehicle, where the project will carry the investigation. This leads to the aim and objectives. Then, previous research about AMT is summarized. Starting with the common problems of AMT, some proposed control strategies follow, which aim to solve the discussed problems. As well, AMTs actuator control strategies are presented. All this analysis led to some recommendations which guide the next steps of the project. Continuing with, the vehicle is introduced with major emphasis on the AMT system. It is explained the present components and new drivers that are designed and built, which provide the functionality needed for the AMT. Next, the controller architecture development process is discussed. Starting from the low-level controllers for each of the AMT actuators, it is explained the strategy used to achieve the control of them. It includes an interesting discussion on how to use the sensors present on the actuators to achieve position control without position feedback. Then, it follows the details on how each actuator is integrated in high-level controllers until achieving the complete control of the AMT successfully. Finally, some conclusions are drawn stating the importance of the feedback sensors for gearbox controllers and the clutch control concerns. Guidance is as well given for further investigation on the AMT system of the prototype vehicle. The light-duty vehicle fleet is expected to undergo substantial technological changes over the next several decades. "The 0́−Frequency Shift0́+ principle has come into wide use in the past decade as a means of transmitting automatic signals over a radio link. It has been demonstrated (l) that a signal-to-noise improvement of 11 db may be obtained over an 0́−on-off0́+ system. The spurious sideband transmission is reduced, (2) and the problem of keying is greatly simplified as the carrier is, essentially, frequency modulated rather than being switched on and off. This method of transmission is at present being used extensively by military and civil communication services working between fixed points. The keying units employed are not, however, readily adapted to mobile use where flexibility and compactness are required in addition to the stability and reliability which is provided. The keyer unit in most common use (2) contains a local oscillator as part of the frequency determining circuit. This requires oven control of critical components and consequently great bulk. The mixer principle which is employed calls for crystals whose frequency differs from the transmitted frequency by 200 Kc/s, which complicates the crystal procurement problem. Various systems have been devised to give crystal control to normal F.M. transmitters. These include the Armstrong system, discriminator control systems and frequency comparison systems. These methods have not been adapted to frequency shift transmission for various reasons as will be outlined in the following pages.[...]" --
