Each artist has submitted a previously unpublished work, and further, has had considerable input in selecting the works they personally feel to be among their finest. In addition, many artists have given a thumbnail sketch of the development of their own professional careers in art, specifically to prompt aspiring artists to consider how they too, can pursue a life of artistic endeavour.

Download Beating about the Bush Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Book that accompanies the exhibition of the same name. Australian landscape images painted en plein air, or on site, from over 120 years ago still hold a powerful nostalgia for audiences today. Our understanding of the Australian landscape has been shaped by interpretations by the artists loosely grouped as the Australian Impressionists. Artists such as Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Walter Withers offered idealised versions of reality framed by their own experiences and desire to create a new national artform. Female artists associated with the group have been marginalised in art history and in exhibitions. In 1980, critic Ian Burn published his essay Beating About The Bush: Landscapes of the Heidelberg School in which he proposed a new reading of the land, where understanding the values of the artists was critical to viewing the paintings. Burn was one of the first to put a social lens across the work of these artists. This exhibition brings Art Gallery of Ballarat's collection of Australian Impressionist landscape paintings together with female photographers who have re-examined the Australian Impressionists and brought a new lens to the Australian landscape. Themes such as gender, hardship of life in the bush, immigration, urban growth, environmental concerns and the presence of Indigenous peoples are explored through the work of some of Australia's most exciting contemporary artists.

Download Monet Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
This publication traces the story of the artistic influences on Monet leading up to the creation of his groundbreaking painting Impression, sunrise in 1872. Centred around this key work that gave Impressionism its name, for the first time Australian audiences will see Monet's paintings in the context of works that shaped the fledgling artist into the leader of Impressionism. The exhibition demonstrates the influence of English landscapists such as JMW Turner and Richard Parkes Bonington, the French Barbizon School and Realist artists working in the decades before Monet, including Charles Daubigny, Camille Corot and Gustave Courbet, as well as Eugène Boudin and Johan Barthold Jongkind, who worked directly with Monet, mentoring him and encouraging him to broaden his artistic approach.

Download John Russell Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Working in Europe at the end of the 19th century, John Russell (1858-1930) was part of the French avant-garde and the only Australian painter to have been closely associated with some of the most original and influential artists in France. He was a close friend of Van Gogh and Rodin, dined with Monet and taught impressionist colour theory to Matisse. Yet, despite the efforts of fellow Australian artist Thea Proctor, his cousin, he remains little known. This major survey presents the breadth of Russell's art from his studies in London and Paris, through impressionism and experimentation with pure colour, to his later fauve-like luminous watercolours.
