In many places in the original text the reader receives the impression that the author has been cut short in what he wished to say, perhaps by the limitations of space, perhaps by the feeling that he was writing for specialists who were quite well acquainted with the subject. This is particularly true of treatment, which is often dismissed with a few words. I have therefore added much of detail, and have tried to incorporate the latest advances in this branch of ophthalmology. In order that no confusion may arise between the work of the distinguished author and that of the humbler editor, I have enclosed in brackets [] everything that is not to be found in the original text.
