Excerpt from Aryan Word-Building The roots given by Sanskrit grammarians, even when not found in literature, deserve the same attention which is given to the Greek forms preserved by Hesychius. The grammarians were familiar with writings and dialects which have been lost. In some cases they may have invented a link in the development of a chain of roots, as I have employed hypothetical roots in brackets. Excerpt from A Table of the Aryan Languages: With Notes and Illustrations That the science of comparative philology is still immature, and that, hence, such generalisations as our Table presents are of necessity imperfect, is no reason why the voung student should be kept in the dark as to the relationship between his mother tongue and the kindred languages (greek, Latin, German, French, &c.) to which he devotes so large a portion of his time, or be allowed, erroneously, to regard those verbal likenesses he cannot fail to notice as simply the result of direct derivation. By keeping before a class some of the general principles upon which the inflections of words and the construction of sentences depend, those repetitions of declensions and conjugations which usually exercise the ear and memory only, may be made instrumental to the development of the judgment. Excerpt from The Cradle of the Aryans The following Essay is a paper originally communicated, necessarily in abridged form, to the members of the Liverpool Literary and Philosophical Society, and is an attempt to give a clear account of present controversies regarding the origin, local and racial, of the Aryan stock. It makes no claim to original discoveries in the field of language; but it embodies the results of somewhat extensive reading, mainly in German authorities; it gives a much fuller account than as yet exists in English of the latest Continental theories; and it presses some conclusions and inferences to what appears to me their legitimate issue, more closely than has been done by previous writers. I give it separate publication, thinking it may be of use to other students in the field of language. The better to fulfil this end, in the sections dealing with vocabulary I have systematically inserted in brackets some familiar representative of the term discussed; where this is not done, it is to be understood that the English word itself represents the stem in question. This, with the comparative tables introduced, will make it easy to check etymological statements, without uncertainty and loss of time. To gain compactness, I have refrained from not a few tempting digressions, and confined myself to categorical statement, with or without supporting reference in the notes. Excerpt from His Star in the East: A Study in the Early Aryan Religions It may be that these experiences have fitted me in some sort to write a book which, without any pre tense to learning, will nevertheless help some who have been perplexed by the many problems which arise from the consideration of God's dealing with his children. Among such there are none whom I would be so glad to help as the young student of the ology, who perhaps has found that such questions are not congenial to the lecture-room of the seminary. There may be some who, without venturing to apply to themselves St. Paul's words, yet have experienced his disappointment, They who were of repute im parted nothing to me, but contrariwise It may be that they shall find here at least the sympathy for which they long. The questions considered here have a direct hear ing on the problem of missions to the heathen, questions which are coming to the front with star tling rapidity. Before these can be answered, it is necessary that we should be clear in our own minds as to what is meant by the heathen. An examination of this will lead us to see that they differ as we do, and that there is no ready-made method by which they can be converted to Christ.
