A Scotland Yard detective is snowed in with a strange family and a killer with a lethal passion for literature in this classic British mystery. Something’s afoot in the village of Snarl. Incidents include animals turned to stone and ominous tombstones inscribed with deaths yet to come. Det. Insp. John Appleby is travelling by train from London to consult on the case. However, impending his arrival to his connecting train is a terrible snowstorm. Fortunately, a fellow passenger, encyclopedia author Everard Raven, invites Appleby to spend the night at his country estate. Appleby soon has second thoughts about accepting the offer. When they get off the train, they meet more of Raven’s relatives, and they are just as unusual as he is. Next, the station is alarmingly named “Appleby’s End.” And then one of the Ravens’ servants is found dead and buried up to their neck in snow . . . As Appleby investigates, he notices an unusual connection between the servant’s body, the mayhem at Snarl, and even his own arrival in the village. They all resemble scenes from the novels of Everard’s late father. Appleby must determine who is behind this bizarre plot before another member of the Raven household meets a literal end. Praise for Michael Innes & Appleby’s End “Mr. Innes is in a class by himself among detective story writers.” —The Times Literary Supplement “As farfetched and literary as Sayers.” —The Cambridge Companion to Crime Fiction “Quite a funny book.” —The New Yorker

Appleby's End was the name of the station where Detective Inspector John Appleby got off the train from Scotland Yard. But that was not the only coincidence. Everything that happened from then on related back to stories by Ranulph Raven, Victorian novelist - animals were replaced by marble effigies, someone received a tombstone telling him when he would die, and a servant was found buried up to his neck in snow, dead. Why did Ranulph Raven's mysterious descendants make such a point of inviting Appleby to spend the night at their house? Legendary character Inspector John Appleby of Scotland Yard inspired a lasting vogue for donnish detective fiction. Innes's detective novels are playfully highbrow and rich in allusions to English literature and to Renaissance art.

In one beautiful page after another, Strout captures the mysterious combinations of hope and sorrow.’ The Washington Post Katherine is only five years old. Struck dumb with grief at her mother's death, it is down to her father, the heartbroken minister Tyler Caskey, to bring his daughter out of silence. But Tyler is barely surviving himself. Since Lauren's death he struggles to find the right words for his sermons – how can he be a leader to his congregation when he himself is lost? When Katherine's teacher calls to discuss his daughter's anti-social behaviour, it sparks a chain of events that begins to tear down Tyler's defences. The small-town rumour-mill has much to make of Katherine's odd behaviour, and even more to say about Tyler's relationship with his housekeeper. The Portrait is set mainly in the late summer/early autumn 1928, and opens in France where Richard Anderson, in his mid-thirties, a wealthy publisher and writer is researching for a book he is writing on his home, Shearwater Manor, a 17th century manor house in Berkshire. The house was very run down when Richard first saw it five years earlier, having been empty for almost one hundred years, since the death of Thomas Courtney, he young squire. His ill-fated life and untimely death had deterred all prospective purchasers until, that is, the arrival of the level-headed and skeptical Richard Anderson. He ordered extensive renovations to return the manor to its former glory, and has been living there for three years, alone, except for the servants, all of whom live out, apart from Maurice, the butler, who has a room at the manor. Whilst in France, Richard meets Yvette Moreau, a young French woman in her early twenties, and after a whirlwind romance the pair fall in love. Yvette has no family, so they return to Shearwater Manor, with plans to marry some weeks later, to enable Richard's closest friends, the Appleby's, to attend the wedding. On their arrival at the manor, Yvette sees a portrait hanging in the sitting room and asks Richard about it. He tells her it is the portrait of Thomas Courtney, who became squire of the estate in the 1820s after the death of his father. He relates the tale of Thomas's short and tragic life, and his eventual suicide, following the death of his wife, Catherine, in a riding accident. However, Richard could never have imagined the effect this subsequently has on Yvette. From that point she becomes obsessed with the story, having vivid dreams and imaginings, with the result that tragedy lies in wait.

“Trapped in their cozy catacombs, the couples have made sex by turns their toy, their glue, their trauma, their therapy, their hope, their frustration, their revenge, their narcotic, their main line of communication and their sole and pitiable shield against the awareness of death.”—Time One of the signature novels of the American 1960s, Couples is a book that, when it debuted, scandalized the public with prose pictures of the way people live, and that today provides an engrossing epitaph to the short, happy life of the “post-Pill paradise.” It chronicles the interactions of ten young married couples in a seaside New England community who make a cult of sex and of themselves. The group of acquaintances form a magical circle, complete with ritualistic games, religious substitutions, a priest (Freddy Thorne), and a scapegoat (Piet Hanema). As with most American utopias, this one’s existence is brief and unsustainable, but the “imaginative quest” that inspires its creation is eternal. Praise for Couples “Couples [is] John Updike’s tour de force of extramarital wanderlust.”—The New York Times Book Review “Ingenious . . . If this is a dirty book, I don’t see how sex can be written about at all.”—Wilfrid Sheed, The New York Times Book Review
