Massachusetts was one of the first American States in which dependable registration was enforced, the earliest legislation in Massachusetts being the requirement for the keeping of records of births, marriages and deaths adopted by the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1639. In 1880 the registration area for deaths established by the United States Bureau of the Census, fie, the States, and cities in other States, effectively enforcing satisfactory registration laws of all deaths registered, included but two States, Massachusetts and New Jersey, the District of Columbia, and a number of cities in non-registration States. During the period 1841 to 1923, inclusive, deaths have been reported, recorded, and tabulated in the Division of Vital Statistics.
