Excerpt from Annual Report of the Surgeon General of the Public Health Service of the United States: For the Fiscal Year 1928 In the birth-registration area during the 10-year period from 1916 to 1925 the decreases in rates were as follows: Birth rate from in 1916 to in 1925 (14 per cent decrease) death rate from to (20 per cent decrease); infant mortality from 101 in 1916 to in 1925 (29 per cent decrease). Complete figures for this area later than those for 1925 are not yet available. At the request of the Ministry of Health of Great Britain, the Surgeon General, who was in Europe at the time attending an inter national meeting, and another experienced officer of the service sat with distinguished scientists who had been appointed to investigate the public-health danger consequent upon the use of certain chemicals in motor fuel. It is gratifying to note that the British Government reached the same decision with reference to the degree of danger from these substances which had already been reached by the committee of scientists appointed by the Public Health Service to consider this question. An international conference on immigration and emigration was held in Habana, Cuba, during March of this fiscal year. Surgs. J. W. Kerr and J. D. Long were designated by the Secretary of State as delegates on behalf of the United States to attend this conference.
