Excerpt from Annual Report of the School Committee of the City of Boston: 1893 In December, 1891, the School Board forwarded to His Honor the Mayor the estimated amount which would be required for carrying on the schools, ex clusive of new school-houses, for the financial year 1892 - 93. The amount asked for was The City Council granted the sum of The Board, with the loyal disposition to comply with the decision of the City Connolly - though the reduc tion of nearly$50,000 from the estimates submitted occasioned them considerable anxiety, earnestly tried to keep within the appropriation granted. They performed the task, but it was by making sacrifices. The reduction was principally met by restricting some and deferring other needed repairs in school-houses, and by curtailing every other item of expense where it was possible to do so. In addition to this reduction His Honor the Mayor, late in the year, requested the city departments (the School Department included) to save as much as possible from the money appro priated to meet certain expenditures not anticipated when the appropriations were granted. The Board responded to this request, and other needed repairs and improvements were deferred, and other items of expense still further curtailed, and the amount of the appropriation unexpended was therefore larger than it would have been.
