A method is described for measuring the dynamic stability derivatives of a model airplane in a wind tunnel. The characteristics features of this system are that single-degree-of-freedom oscillations were used to obtain combinations of rolling, yawing, and pitching motions; that the oscillations were excited and controlled by velocity feedback which permitted operation under conditions unfavorable for more conventional types of oscillatory testing; and that data processing was greatly simplified by using analog computer elements in the strain-gage circuitry.

The general objective was to collect and analyze aerodynamic stability and control data for the XV-4B, XV-5A, and P-1127 VTOL configurations. Correlation and analysis of existing model data were made to investigate hover and transition characteristics. Particular emphasis was placed on the aerodynamic power effects, sometimes referred to as interference effects. Other areas of investigation were sometimes referred to as interference effects. Other areas of investigation were nondimensional coefficients used to present VTOL data and wind tunnel test techniques. Wind tunnel tests were conducted using an inlet only model and a jet only model to investigate special test and analysis problems for these components. The agreement between different sets of XV-4B model data was, in general, found to be poor. However, the nondimensional coefficients used by Lockheed to reduce to XV-4B model data appear to be valid parameters for this category of VTOL airplane. The jet entrainment flow was shown by experiment to be the primary cause of the XV-4B power effects, and the XV-4B jet path was experimentally and theoretically determined.

This project examines the motion and aerodynamic data associated with dynamic wind tunnel tests. Historically, the aerodynamic data measured with dynamic testing has not correlated well with actual flight data, and in general has not been used in system simulations for aircrew training or flight analysis. An improved data reduction method is presented to extract signal data from dynamic tests. The reduction method applies a Fourier series approximation fit to oscillatory data, and a linear regression fit to steady state data. Both methods provide good signal extraction and data smoothing. Additionally, the report documents methods and equations developed by Juri Kalviste for the handling, analysis, and simulation of dynamic data. A prototype software program has been developed to exercise the reduction methods. The program uses a new modeling architecture that enables rapid, seamless incorporation of alternative reduction or aerodynamic modeling methods.

A computer method has been developed to aid in analysis of static stability data from wind tunnel tests of symmetric bodies. A third-order least-squares curve fit is used to slope the test data and shift its origin to zero. The method provides a rapid, consistent means of analyzing test data with indications of quality of fit. This method is especially useful in extracting incremental effects of minor configuration changes. A copy of a computer program using this method is included. (Author).

A program was conducted to obtain data, both steady state and dynamic, from wind tunnel models and full scale flight tests of the RA-5C aircraft. Data were acquired on 0.228 and 0. 125 scale RA-5C inlet models and on a fully instrumented flight test RA-5C aircraft. Interim data reports presenting the data acquired during each test have been published. These data were utilized in this report to develop scaling techniques for correlating small scale model wind tunnel data with full scale flight data. Data presented include duct steady state operating characteristics and pressure distributions in the inlet and at the engine face. Dynamic data are presented in the form of engine face turbulence contour plots, radial turbulence distributions and selected spectral data functions. Data are presented for variations of angle of attack, angle of yaw, Reynolds number, ramp angle, secondary flow rates and inlet diverter width. Brief descriptions of the model and test methods are also presented.
