An experimental investigation was conducted into four areas of the solid fuel ramjet combustion process: (1) the effects of near-wall turbulent mixing and equivalence ratio on combustion efficiency, (2) the effects of bypass air on combustion efficiency, (3) the combustion process in a cylindrically perforated fuel grain with a twin side-dump/dome configuration, and (4) the comparison of experimental radial temperature profiles to computer generated radial profiles. Polymethylmethacrylate fuel grains were burned in a ramjet motor and a thrust stand. Combustion efficiencies were determined and compared for different configurations. It was found to be insensitive to variations in the mixture ratio and to near-wall mixing. Bypass air was found to adversely affect the combustion efficiency both in stable and unstable combustion environments. The twin side-dump/dome configuration was unable to sustain combustion for all conditions investigated. Theoretical radial temperature profiles were found to have larger near wall gradients than were measured experimentally. (Author).

An experimental investigation was conducted of highly metallized (approximately 70% by weight) solid fuels burned in a two-dimensional solid fuel ramjet (SFRJ). High speed motion pictures were taken of the combustion process through viewing windows located at two locations along the fuel slab length. Films revealed various ejection events ranging from small particle ejections to large flakes of burning an non-burning material leaving the surface. Nine different fuels were tested at air mass fluxes fo 0.2 and 0.5 pounds mass per inch squared per second and pressures ranging from 35 to 200 psia. There was evidence that both minor binder ingredient changes (polymer and curative) and the inclusion of magnesium resulted in larger required inlet step heights to sustain combustion. Most of the metallized fuels did not burn well at pressures below approximately 40 psia. Low air mass fluxes generally resulted in larger metallic surface agglomerations, larger particles in the gas phase and more dominant shedding of surface layers.

An experimental and analytical investigation was conducted of the combustion behavior in solid fuel ramjets. The effects of configuration variables on combustion performance were experimentally determined. Air ducting methods were found to affect combustion efficiency through port flow rates, bypass dump momentum and geometry and bypass ratio. Bypass configurations with plexiglas fuel altered the heat transfer mechanisms within the port and decreased combustion efficiency. The analytical model was found to be in qualitative agreement with experimental data. Finite rate kinetics and radiative transfer to the fuel surface will be required in the model to obtain more quantitative accuracy. (Author).

Limited experimental data indicated that fuel vapor composition within the SFRJ combustor may have a significant effect on the obtainable combustion efficiency and upon the dependence of combustion efficiency upon equivalence ratio and air mass flow rate. Combustor pressure oscillations in bypass operation were found to increase regression rates when using PMM fuel grains and to increase or decrease combustion efficiency depending upon equivalence ratio.

An experimental investigation of the mechanisms involved in combustion pressure oscillations in solid fuel ramjets was conducted. Dynamic pressure measurements of the combustion chamber and air inlet were recorded, while a series of tests using Plexiglas as a fuel were performed. Combustion chamber geometric changes were systematically made in order to help isolate the causal mechanisms. The air inlet system resonant frequency coupling with reattachment zone flow was found to be the major source of pressure oscillations while bypass air injection was the major source of disturbance to the upstream reattachment region of flow. The combustion efficiency of a vitiated air heater was also evaluated using a gas chromatograph to measure unburned fuel in the exhaust. Negligible unburned gaseous fuel existed for all fuel-air ratios and temperatures. (Author).

A research program has been carried out to validate a numerical simulation of the flow and combustion process in the combustion chamber of a solid fuel ramjet with experimental results. Operating conditions were chosen to represent a sustained missile flight at Mach 4 at an altitude of 13 km. Experimental data were obtained by burning cylindrical fuel grains made of polyethylene and hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene in a solid fuel ramjet using a connected pipe facility. For numerical simulation a computer code was developed, describing rotational symmetric steady-state turbulent reacting flows through channels with and without a sudden expansion. Calculations were carried out using polyethylene as a fuel. For the validation emphasis was laid on the regression rate. The results show that the computer code predicts the mean regression rate with reasonable accuracy. The value for the effective heat of gasification is found to be very important. The experiments and the calculations carried out show the feasibility to apply a solid fuel ramjet for sustained hypersonic flight at these conditions.
