Excerpt from An Exposition of the Parables and of Other Parts of the Gospels, Vol. 2 of 5 There are some observations, however, which may be made even on the material constitution of the parable; and some circumstances of explanation, which it is still necessary to premise, in order to proceed to the consideration of its scope and import. Excerpt from An Exposition of the Parables and of Other Parts of the Gospels, Vol. 5 of 5: Part II With regard to any other instances of the use of the word parable, or napabon'n, in the Gospels I think I shall best illustrate it, by premising an explanation of the use and meaning of the word wapafiow, as em ployed by the writers on rhetoric, anciently, and especially by Aristotle - to describe a peculiar kind of reasoning. Those who have attended critically to the minutiae of style, and peculiarities of idiom in the four Gospels - and especially in St. Luke's - must have remarked the occurrence of certain words in his use of terms, which are not to be met with in the prose Greek authors - but only in the poets. Excerpt from An Exposition of the Parables, Vol. 4 of 5: And of Other Parts of the Gospels It may be quite clear from these descriptions, that the villicus had great powers intrusted to him, in his proper department and for his proper jurisdiction that he represented his master, and exercised his authority, in taking care of his property, looking after his servants, inspecting the conduct of each, punishing or rewarding as he saw fit, disposing of the produce of their la bour, supplying their necessary wants, taking care of them when ill, keeping them to their duty when well, being always with them, both at home and abroad, instructing and teaching them when they required it, and encouraging them by his ex ample as much as by his precepts. But it is equally clear that all this was done in the management of his master's property in the country only, and for the superintendence of the various de scriptions of persons employed on a farm. Before we can ob tain a just idea of the oixovo'pos in the two parables of our Lord, we must conceive the notion of a servant placed in the same de legated capacity over all his master's property, whether in the town, or in the country; and in the exercise of his commission, not confined to one place, or to one description of services, re quiring power and confidence, more than to another. Excerpt from An Exposition of the Parables, Vol. 1 of 5: And of Other Parts of the Gospels So many excellent works upon the parables in general, and so many admirable discourses in explanation of particular parables, are already before the religious world, that no part of the New Testament would seem to stand less in need of further elucidation. The peculiarly interesting character of the parabolic mode of teaching - the simplicity, pathos, and elegance of these narratives - the valuable uses to which they are practically subservient- the isolated position of each of the number, which makes its introduction into the body of the gospel - history, a kind of episode in the sacred text, whence it is easy to detach it, for the purpose of commenting upon it, illustrating, and explaining it by itself: these, and other considerations which might readily be suggested to account for the fact, have naturally contributed to direct the attention of expositors and readers, perhaps more exclusively to the parables, than to any part of the gospels besides. Under these circumstances, the author of the following work, cannot but feel that some apology will be expected from him, for venturing to lay before the religious public, a new attempt at an Exposition of the Parables; which, at first sight, would seem either needlessly to go over ground again which has already been fully explored, or virtually to call in question the sufficiency of former works of the same description. Excerpt from An Exposition of the Parables and of Other Parts of the Gospels, Vol. 3 of 5 The parable of the good Samaritan might have been called, with more propriety, the parable in answer to the question, Who is my neighbour and this denomination would have intimated the occa sion out of which it arose. The expediency of re plying to such an inquiry by an example, may be shewn hereafter: but as even this particular ques tion arose out of a conversation on a more general subject, between our Lord and a certain lawyer, we shall not be prepared to enter with advantage either on the question, or on the parable which as signs the reply to it, until we have considered the particulars of the previous discourse.
