Excerpt from Treatise on Plane and Solid Geometry: For Colleges, Schools, and Private Students The science of Elementary Geometry, after remaining nearly stationary for two thousand years, has, for a century past, been making decided progress. This is owing, mainly, to two causes: discoveries in the higher mathematics have thrown new light upon the elements of the science; and the demands of schools, in all enlightened nations, have called out many Works by able mathematicians and skillful teachers. Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Solid Geometry I have discussed the different surfaces which can be represented by the general equation of the second degree at an earlier stage than is sometimes adopted. I think that this arrangement is for many reasons the most satisfactory, and I do not believe that beginners will find it difficult. The examples have been principally taken from recent University and College Examination papers; I have also included many interesting theorems of M. Chasles. Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Solid Geometry, Vol. 3 The present work is intended as an introductory text-book for the use of Students reading for the Mathematical Tripos. Many of the higher applications of the subject are therefore either omitted entirely or treated very briefly. At the same time the Author believes that the book includes as much as the great majority of Cambridge Students have time to master thoroughly, while those who are desirous of making farther acquaintance with the subject will perhaps find a work like the present not unsuitable as an introduction to the more complete treatises of Salmon and others. The Author begs to thank those of his friends who have kindly assisted him by revising the manuscript and proof sheets, and will feel obliged to any one who will offer corrections or improvements. Examples, selected chiefly from recent College and University Examination Papers, will be found at the end of each Chapter. Cambridge, August, 1865.
