A general analytical travel time model for the quadruple command cycle in double deep storage systems with a dual capacity load handling device is formulated and validated by means of a simulation model. Various routing and sequencing strategies are composed. A simulation model is used to compare strategies for differnt AS/RS configurations and settings to assess them in consideration of real-world cases. For selected strategies, analytical formulations are derived.

The content of this thesis draws heavily on work completed during a 6.5 month MIT Leaders for Manufacturing (LFM) internship at Dell Corporation's personal computer manufacturing facility in Lebanon, Tennessee (EG1) from June 2004 to December 2004. This work relates primarily to efforts to analyze and improve the throughput of the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) in that factory. Wherever possible, the thesis abstracts from the EG1 factory case study to provide lessons for improving the throughput of ASRSs and accumulative manufacturing systems in general. In addition to this core of the thesis, specific implementation challenges encountered during the EG 1 case study are addressed. Finally, general cultural observations about Dell's manufacturing environment are discussed. The author believes the two most unique aspects of this work are the Crane Frontier framework developed for analyzing ASRS throughput (Section 2.6) and the range and taxonomy of ASRS throughput improvement solutions (Chapter 3).

Shuttle-based storage and retrieval systems (SBS/RSs) are an important part of today's warehouses. In this work, a new approach is developed that can be applied to model different configurations of SBS/RSs. The approach is based on the modeling of SBS/RSs as discrete-time open queueing networks and yields the complete probability distributions of the performance measures.

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

This book records the new research findings and development in the field of industrial engineering, and it will serve as the guidebook for the potential development in industrial engineering and smart manufacturing. It gathers the accepted papers from the 24th International conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management held at Central South University of Forestry and Technology in Changsha during May 19-20, 2018. The aim of this conference was to provide a high-level international forum for experts, scholars and entrepreneurs at home and abroad to present the recent advances, new techniques and application, to promote discussion and interaction among academics, researchers and professionals to promote the developments and applications of the related theories and technologies in universities and enterprises, and to establish business or research relations to find global partners for future collaboration in the field of Industrial Engineering. It addresses diverse themes in smart manufacturing, artificial intelligence, ergonomics, simulation and modeling, quality and reliability, logistics engineering, data mining and other related fields. This timely book summarizes and promotes the latest achievements in the field of industrial engineering and related fields over the past year, proposing prospects and vision for the further development.
