This volume provides a new theoretical framework for understanding both the development of the international oil industry and the role played by oil in the emergence of US postwar hegemony. As such, it directly addresses contemporary developments in international relations theory and the recent debates over the character and longevity of United States hegemony. While providing a narrative account of the oil industry from its origins in the nineteenth century through to the present, the main focus of American Hegemony and World Oil is an analytic treatment of the postwar period. Drawing widely on political economy, international relations and the recent literature on the state, the book offers a comprehensive study of the connections between United States hegemony and the international oil industry. The book begins with a critical discussion of theoretical approaches in political economy, international relations, and state theory which have informed discussions of the oil industry. Bromley goes on to survey the early emergence of the industry and its interwar consolidation, the ordering of the postwar industry under United States leadership, and the crisis of the 1970s. The book ends with an examination of the post-OPEC restructuring and the current strategies of the US, Japan, Europe, OPEC and the USSR. This book will be of interest to students of political economy, international relations, and political sociology.

This book illustrates the story of oil politics from the 20th century until today. It begins with the overthrow of the Iranian regime in 1953, and continues until the current rush for resources in the Arctic. However, the book does not simply outline these events, but, it also explains the reasons for the specific development of states acts. Thereby, this study is based on the International Political Economy and International Relations theory – a combination that makes this book unique. Finally, the book gives the reader an insight of the petro state while outlining the strategic importance of oil itself.

"Oil has transformed the world and remains the most important resource of our age. It has made the wealth of millions of people - from Venequela to Norway via the Persian Gulf - and holds their futures in its fortunes. In the current political climate of the Middle East and Central Asia, where anti-Americanism runs high and the threat of terrorism in such countries as Saudi Arabia has left the world economy very nervous, oil is of prime geopolitical concern. "Crude Power" provides a comprehensive analysis of the world's dependency on Middle Eastern oil, and of the very dangerous way politics and economics play themselves out in the oil game - as producers and consumers tug at each others' interests. Oystein Noreng places OPEC (the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries), into its wider world context, and examines in detail how shifting oil prices affect everything from international trade balances to inflation rates."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Developing countries in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America have made huge profits from exporting oil in recent years and have won great control over world markets. This book looks at the background to examine why this vast oil revenue has done so little to bring about sustained economic and political development in these countries. Separate chapters consider: the impact of oil on individual developing countries, from initial exploitation through to the present day; the evolution of the international oil industry as a whole; and US and British oil policies. The work is fully up-to-date and contains statistical material.
