The rate of production of sea water droplets by bubble bursting at the ocean surface is virtually impossible to measure directly. Laboratory simulations are also difficult. However, the surface flux can be inferred from measurements of the rate of change of aerosol densities and changes in the height of the marine boundary mixed layer. Data from CEWCOM-78 has been analyzed to produce the aerosol surface flux volume spectrum from 0.5 to 15 micrometers radius at a wind speed of 8 m/sec. Using this flux spectrum and equilibrium aerosol spectra from JASIN, similar flux spectra are calculated for sind speeds from 5 to 15 m/sec.

It is important to the physics and chemistry of the marine atmosphere and to marine geochemistry and biogeochemistry generally. It affects visibility, remote sensing, atmospheric chemistry, and air quality. Sea salt aerosol particles interact with other atmospheric gaseous and aerosol constituents by acting as sinks for condensable gases and suppressing new particle formation, thus influencing the size distribution of these other aerosols and more broadly influencing the geochemical cycles of substances with which they interact. As the key aerosol constituent over much of Earth's surface at present, and all the more so in pre-industrial times, SSA is central to description of Earth's aerosol burden.

Aerosol size distributions near the coast of Panama City, Florida and off the Southern California coast near the Channel Islands are investigated in this study. The relationships of the coastal marine aerosol to wind speed, relative humidity, stability, and sub-synoptic circulation are examined. Relative humidity and stability are shown to have the largest effect on the aerosol distribution during periods of light winds. Coalescence and sedimentation of droplets greater than 1.5 micrometer radius are most pronounced when the wind speed and sea surface production of salt nuclei are weak. When wind speeds exceed 7 m/sec, a state of equilibrium between sedimentation and production of these larger droplets appears to exist. An apparent zone of transition between the two bubble bursting sea-salt producing mechanisms is observed near .5 micrometer radius. The highest correlation betwwen wind speed and particle concentration occurs under unstable conditions. Secondary circulations are shown to be important determinants of the coastal marine aerosol in the absence of synoptic scale forcing. (Author).

This volume contains the ten most cited articles that have appeared in the journal Atmosphere-Ocean since 1995. As the regional models required to understand and control the generation, distribution and deposition of air pollutants become more precise, the need to understand the detailed effects of hilly and mountainous terrain becomes more acute. During the Conference on Air-Sea Interaction in January 1986, it was suggested to me by David Larner of Reidel Press that it may be timely for an updated compendium of air-sea interaction theory to be organized, developed, and published. Many new results were emerging at the time, i.e., results from the MARSEN, MASEX, MILDEX, and TOWARD field projects (among others) were in the process of being reported and/or published. Further, a series of new experiments such as FASINEX and HEXOS were soon to be conducted in which new strides in our knowledge of air-sea fluxes would be made. During the year following the discussions with David Larner, it became apparent that many of the advances in air-sea interaction theory during the 1970s and 1980s were associated with sponsor investments in satellite oceanography and, in particular, remote sensing research. Since ocean surface remote sensing, e.g., scatterometry and SAR, requires intimate knowledge of ocean surface dynamics, advances in remote sensing capabilities required coordinated research in air-sea fluxes, wave state, scattering theory, sensor design, and data exploitation using environmental models. Based on this interplay of disciplines, it was decided that this book be devoted to air sea interaction and remote sensing as multi-disciplinary activities.
