Storms at sea, dangerous dive operations, and the science and mysteries of archeology drive this intriguing, true story set in the far Pacific. The narrative follows the adventures of two expeditions to a remote, unique, and uninhabited speck of land in the South Pacific — Swains Island — where author Daniel J. Basta introduces the reader to a traditional Polynesian culture and tiny Fagatele Bay. At the same time, he documents the expeditions’ roles in laying the foundations for the largest expansion of a marine sanctuary in U.S. history. Throughout the book, interesting and unorthodox personalities come to life, including that of Jean Michel Cousteau, whose award-winning documentary film about the second expedition, Swains Island — One of the Last Jewels of the Planet, escalates sanctuary expansion efforts. Finally, President George W. Bush takes action that leads to the creation of the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa. But, above all, this story is about people — the American Samoans! Testimonials “Writer Daniel J. Basta is a tough, Brooklyn-raised brainiac who pulls no punches. In this book, he respectfully reveals the transformational power of the American Samoan culture, while satisfying his hunger for history, thirst for exploration, and enduring quest for adventure.” Steve Gittings, Coral-Reef Scientist “A great read about an American Samoan adventure, and how marine resources protection can be achieved.” The Honorable Togiola Tulafono, Governor of American Samoa, Retired “Explore history, science, and culture in a remote maritime area and learn how marine protected areas can be created in such places in this enjoyable narrative journey. A great companion piece to Jean Michel Cousteau's award-winning documentary, Swains Island — One of the Last Jewels of the Planet." Ole Varmer, Marine Protected Areas Attorney

American Samoa is a group of islands located in the South Pacific, lying roughly 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii. It is an unincorporated territory of the United States, meaning that it is under American sovereignty but is not part of the 50 states. American Samoa consists of five volcanic islands and two coral atolls that cover an area of approximately 76 square miles. The islands have a tropical climate and are largely covered in lush rainforest with a diverse range of flora and fauna. American Samoa is home to a diverse culture that has been shaped by its unique history and geographical location. The islands were originally settled by Polynesian explorers, who brought with them their traditions, religion, and language. In 1899, the United States annexed the islands, and American Samoans became US nationals. Today, the islands are governed by an elected governor and legislature, and the people of American Samoa have a unique cultural identity that reflects their rich history and their position between Polynesia and the United States.

"The narrative which follows was prepared at the request of Senator Hiram Bingham, of Connecticut, chairman of the American Samoan Commission, by the two newspapermen who accompanied the commission on its trip from Honolulu to Samoa. Its purpose is not so much to record the work of the commission from the standpoint of what may have been accomplished, but to recount all the essential details of what transpired during the visit of the commission to Samoa"--Preface.

Ua fuifui faatasi, ae vaoeseese "Gathered into one flock from different parts of the forest" The beauty of this Samoan proverb poetically describes The Samoans: A Global Family. From the tea estates of Sri Lanka to the deserts of the Sudan, from the Himalayas of Bhutan to the jungles of Brazil, and from the People's Republic of China to Papua New Guinea, a family is gathered in 285 color photographs captioned with the proverbs of 30 languages. Each person recounts his or her autobiography: a cardinal in Rome, a cowboy in the outback of Australia, a champion sumo wrestler in Japan, a jet pilot in nothern Alaska, an NFL football player at the Super Bowl, a nun in the slums of Lima, Peru. Each brings a story from his part of the "forest." The book is the result of a two-and-a-half-year odyssey around the world, through 45 countries and 20 states and into the lives of over 125 Samoans documenting what it means to be Samoan not only in Samoa but in the farthest reaches of the globe.

Excerpt from American Samoa: A General Report by the Governor In 1830 the London Missionary Society established a mission in one of the Samoan Islands, and followed that up by extensive opera tions in all the islands. The United States exploring expedition, under the command of Lieut. Charles Wilkes, United States Navy, made the first scientific investigations in the islands, in 1839. This expedition, composed of six vessels, was equipped for the particular purpose of surveying and exploring the unfrequented islands of the South Seas. A staff of competent civilian scientists was on board, and the ships (all naval vessels) were prepared for accurate survey work. The surveys then made of the Samoan Islands, though necessarily hurried ones, were for many years the basis of our charts. The latest survey of the islands of American Samoa was completed in 1920, and charts from this survey will shortly be issued. As early as 1850 England, Germany, and the United States were represented by commercial agents in Apia, Samoa. During the next 20 years Germans and Englishmen were more forward than the Americans in establishing trading stations, acquiring land, and devel oping intimat'e relations with the natives. Americans took very little interest in Samoa at this time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
