A multilevel method for the solution of systems of equations generated by stabilized Finite Element discretizations of the Euler and Navier Stokes equations on generalized unstructured grids is described. The method is based on an elemental agglomeration multigrid which produces a hierarchical sequence of coarse subspaces. Linear combinations of the basis functions from a given space form the next subspace and the use of the Galerkin Coarse Grid Approximation (GCA) within an Algebraic Multigrid (AMG) context properly defines the hierarchical sequence. The multigrid coarse spaces constructed by the elemental agglomeration algorithm are based on a semi-coarsening scheme designed to reduce grid anisotropy. The multigrid transfer operators are induced by the graph of the coarse space mesh and proper consideration is given to the boundary conditions for an accurate representation of the coarse space operators. A generalized line implicit relaxation scheme is also described where the lines are constructed to follow the direction of strongest coupling. The solution algorithm is motivated by the decomposition of the system characteristics into acoustic and convective modes. Analysis of the application of elemental agglomeration AMG (AMGe) to stabilized numerical schemes shows that a characteristic length based rescaling of the numerical stabilization is necessary for a consistent multigrid representation.

This volume contains a selection from the papers presented at the Fifth European Multigrid Conference, held in Stuttgart, October 1996. All contributions were carefully refereed. The conference was organized by the Institute for Computer Applications (ICA) of the University of Stuttgart, in cooperation with the GAMM Committee for Scientific Computing, SFB 359 and 404 and the research network WiR Ba-Wü. The list of topics contained lectures on Multigrid Methods: robustness, adaptivity, wavelets, parallelization, application in computational fluid dynamics, porous media flow, optimisation and computational mechanics. A considerable part of the talks focused on algebraic multigrid methods.

A thoughtful consideration of the current level of development of multigrid methods, this volume is a carefully edited collection of papers that addresses its topic on several levels. The first three chapters orient the reader who is familiar with standard numerical techniques to multigrid methods, first by discussing multigrid in the context of standard techniques, second by detailing the mechanics of use of the method, and third by applying the basic method to some current problems in fluid dynamics. The fourth chapter provides a unified development, complete with theory, of algebraic multigrid (AMG), which is a linear equation solver based on multigrid principles. The last chapter is an ambitious development of a very general theory of multigrid methods for variationally posed problems. Included as an appendix is the latest edition of the Multigrid Bibliography, an attempted compilation of all existing research publications on multigrid.

A high-order discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretization and p-multigrid solution procedure for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations are presented. The discretization has an element-compact stencil such that only elements sharing a face are coupled, regardless of the solution space. This limited coupling maximizes the effectiveness of the p-multigrid solver, which relies on an element-line Jacobi smoother. The element-line Jacobi smoother solves implicitly on lines of elements formed based on the coupling between elements in a p = 0 discretization of the scalar transport equation. Fourier analysis of 2-D scalar convection-diffusion shows that the element-line Jacobi smoother as well as the simpler element Jacobi smoother are stable independent of p and flow condition. Mesh refinement studies for simple problems with analytic solutions demonstrate that the discretization achieves optimal order of accuracy of O(h(̂p+l)). A subsonic, airfoil test case shows that the multigrid convergence rate is independent of p but weakly dependent on h. Finally, higher-order is shown to outperform grid refinement in terms of the time required to reach a desired accuracy level.

This volume consists of six articles, each treating an important topic in the theory ofthe Navier-Stokes equations, at the research level. Some of the articles are mainly expository, putting together, in a unified setting, the results of recent research papers and conference lectures. Several other articles are devoted mainly to new results, but present them within a wider context and with a fuller exposition than is usual for journals. The plan to publish these articles as a book began with the lecture notes for the short courses of G.P. Galdi and R. Rannacher, given at the beginning of the International Workshop on Theoretical and Numerical Fluid Dynamics, held in Vancouver, Canada, July 27 to August 2, 1996. A renewed energy for this project came with the founding of the Journal of Mathematical Fluid Mechanics, by G.P. Galdi, J. Heywood, and R. Rannacher, in 1998. At that time it was decided that this volume should be published in association with the journal, and expanded to include articles by J. Heywood and W. Nagata, J. Heywood and M. Padula, and P. Gervasio, A. Quarteroni and F. Saleri. The original lecture notes were also revised and updated.
