Thoughts on anarchists, sightseeing, cheese, and more from “one of the finest essayists to ever grace the English language” (Joseph Pearce, author of Twelve Great Books). Renowned for his prolific writing—everything from philosophy screeds to detective fiction—G. K. Chesterton had a worldview like no other, one that inspires thinkers to this day. In this collection of writings, he shares his thoughts on a diverse array of topics, making no apologies for his leaps from one subject to another. He’s not afraid to get into the down and dirty of everyday life. Of his essays—on futurists, telegraph poles, kinds of men, and more sundry subjects—he writes: “This row of shapeless and ungainly monsters which I now set before the reader does not consist of separate idols cut out capriciously in lonely valleys or various islands. These monsters are meant for the gargoyles of a definite cathedral. I have to carve the gargoyles, because I can carve nothing else; I leave to others the angels and the arches and the spires.” Praise for the writing of G. K. Chesterton: “If you, reader of this volume, are fortunate enough to have contact with young readers of our own day, do, I implore you, introduce them to the essay form—and there is no better place to start than with G. K. Chesterton.” —Aidan Mackey, author of G. K. Chesterton: A Prophet for the 21st Century “He is a teacher who paints with words. Each of his essays is both a lesson and a work of art.” —Dale Ahlquist, author of G. K. Chesterton: Apostle of Common Sense

If Mr. Chesterton had been permitted to have his own way this handful of papers would have been sent out under the title of "Gargoyles." Perhaps the publisher foresaw horror upon the faces of really unimaginative readers when once brought face to face with a "monster" title; so it was changed to "Alarms and discursions," as indefinite and capable of possibilities as one could wish. "Fragments of futile journalism or fleeting impressions," Mr. Chesterton calls his essays. "This row of shapeless and ungainly monsters . . . does not consist of separate idols cut out capriciously in lonely valleys or various islands. These monsters are meant for the gargoyles of a definite cathedral. I have to carve the gargoyles, because I can carve nothing else; I leave to others the angels and the arches and the spires." Forty essays, in which excellent common sense and brilliantly phrased wisdom mingle with sheer nonsense.

"Alarms and Discursions by G. K. Chesterton: " Publisher: Kindle E-Book Edition: ISBN-13: 978-1-78379-133-0 Alone at some distance from the wasting walls of a disused abbey I found half sunken in the grass the grey and goggle-eyed visage of one of those graven monsters that made the ornamental water-spouts in the cathedrals of the Middle Ages. It lay there, scoured by ancient rains or striped by recent fungus, but still looking like the head of some huge dragon slain by a primeval hero. And as I looked at it, I thought of the meaning of the grotesque, and passed into some symbolic reverie of the three great stages of art. "Publisher: " Catholic Way Publishing. This Paperback is the ideal small size of 5" x 8."

Excerpt from Alarms and Discursions That far more serious problem. I had pur posed to call this book Gargoyles traces of such an intention can still be detected (i fear) in the second essay. Some time ago I tried to write an unobtrusive sociological essay called What Is Wrong. Somehow or other it turned into a tremendous philippic called What's Wrong with the World, with a photo graph of myself outside; a photograph I swear I had never seen before and am far from anxious to see again. Such things arise from the dul ness and languor of authors, as compared with the hope and romantic ardour of publishers. In this case the publisher provided the title: and if he had provided the book too I dare say it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
