Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age Cycladic culture is best known for its flat female idols carved out of the islands' pure white marble. This beautiful illustrated book explores these periods in Cycladic culture and how the natural environment of the islands shaped its art. It also addresses the settlements of these periods and the artifacts produced by their potters, marble-carvers, and metalworkers. Maps are interspersed throughout the text, along with a chronological table, plans of known settlements, cemeteries, and individual tombs, as well as photographs of archaeological digs and landscapes by well-known photographers. Items from the Museum's Collection are also presented, followed by commentary and comprehensive text that venture at the items' probable significance and functions.

This book is a collection of 22 selected papers from the homonymous Conference held in September 2003 Milos, Greece. The aim of the conference was to serve as a forum for the presentation and constructive discussion of the state-of-the-art and emerging issues on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc. In the first part of the book the tectonic- geodynamic setting and the present upper mantle structure of the Aegean area are discussed. It includes an interesting interpretation of data on the spatial distribution of intermediate focal depth earthquakes, fault plane solutions and deep velocity structures, to further investigate active tectonics related to the deep structure of the southern Aegean volcanic arc. The second part deals with general volcanological, petrological and tectonic characteristics of the SAAVA presenting an extensive review of volcanological, chemical, isotope and tectonic data, using a large amount of new field and laboratory data. Interesting conclusions are presented regarding the present volcanic associations, the volcanic fields location and shape in respect to the large tectonic lineaments and the plate motions, the source of the SAAVA parental magmas. Presented in the third part is an extensive review on the volcanic hazard assessment and the monitoring state of the SAAVA centers. Seismic and geodetic monitoring of the Santorini volcano and the recent (1995-1998) crisis of Nisyros volcano are presented and discussed. The last part deals with hydrothermal deposits and processes in the SAAVA, as well as products and processes in adjacent areas with a particular interest and significance that link them to the SAAVA processes. *Systematic re-evaluation on the geodynamic and tectonic setting of the Aegean active volcanic centers *Thorough review with new data and ideas on the magma source region, the magma differentiation processes in both the deep and shallow levels, and the volcanological processes related both to the magma composition and storage depth as well as to the tectonic regime of the volcano growth area *Up to date estimation of the volcanic hazard in the Aegean area, and a detailed presentation of the present state and the monitoring efforts of the South Aegean active centers

Objectives of this research were 1) to compare internal waves and mixing at shallow (100 m) and intermediate (500 m) depths, 2) to relate internal wave variability to changes in local winds, and 3) to observe how internal waves and mixing evolve between the basin and plateau, meaning the deep Cretan Sea and the Cyclidic Plateau. To obtain moored internal wave records of several months we deployed four moorings, three McLane Moored Profilers (MPs) and two ADCPs. Results observed included 1) shallow depths were mostly in the pycnocline and consequently have much larger dissipation rates than weakly stratified deep water, 2) mixing increased with increases in wind stress accompanying the rapid transition from summer to autumnal weather, and 3) internal waves were dominated by the internal tide, apparently generated along the upper part of the slope. Closely confined near the bathymetry, detectable mixing was very weak and intermittent in deeper water.

Greek and Latin Literature (1969) examines the two ancient literatures using a comparative method that recognizes the links between them – most Latin genres owe something to their Greek forebears. How far was Virgil influenced by Homer, Cicero by Demosthenes, Horace by Sappho and Alcaeus? How far did their techniques differ? How far did they share the same interests? Each contributor to this volume aims to answer such questions.

In this study of the world of ancient Greek mariners, the relationship between the natural environment and the techniques and technology of seafaring is focused upon. An initial description of the geology, oceanography and meteorology of Greece and the Mediterranean, is followed by discussion of the resulting sailing conditions, such as physical hazards, sea conditions, winds and availability of shelter, and environmental factors in sailing routes, sailing directions, and navigational techniques. Appendices discuss winter and night sailing, ship design, weather prediction, and related areas of socio-maritime life, such as settlement, religion, and warfare. Wide-ranging sources and illustrations are used to demonstrate both how the environment shaped many of the problems and constraints of seafaring, and also that Greek mariners' understanding of the environment was instrumental in their development of a highly successful seafaring tradition.

The mesmerising new novel from the twice Booker-shortlisted author of Hot Milk and Swimming Home If she was my double and I was hers, was it true that she was knowing, I was unknowing, she was sane, I was crazy, she was wise, I was foolish? The air was electric between us, the way we transmitted our feelings to each other as they flowed through our arms, which were touching. At the height of her career, the piano virtuoso Elsa M. Anderson—former child prodigy, now in her thirties—walks off the stage in Vienna, midperformance. Now she is in Athens, watching an uncannily familiar woman purchase a pair of mechanical dancing horses at a flea market. Elsa wants the horses too, but there are no more for sale. She drifts to the ferry port, on the run from her talent and her history. So begins her journey across Europe, shadowed by the elusive woman who seems to be her double. A dazzling portrait of melancholy and metamorphosis, Deborah Levy’s August Blue uncovers the ways in which we attempt to revise our oldest stories and make ourselves anew.

We live in this planet since time immemorial, a tiny dot in an ocean of darkness. All the people we know and love live here. Here are our dreams and our disappointments. This planet is our country; this planet is us. In this planet we live as our ancestors did. This land belongs to all religions, faiths and their representatives, teachers of ethics, fair men, people who create but also people who destroy. Some people whose only goal is ending up with the civilization. Corrupt people who do not respect the essence of the human being and whose desire is their enrichment based on the death of others. War lords turned this planet into a theatre where they represent a terrible play in which the death is the main character. A play in which blood flows as rivers and floods the corpses of its innocent victims. Why is this happening? Why this willingness to kill each other it is so uncontrollable? I know that nobody will come to help us in case of a hecatomb; a savior will not come from another planet to rid us of ourselves. There is no place for us to flee or to emigrate to. Why do not we treat ourselves with love and respect? Why do not we build rather than destroy? Why is the human being so selfish? This planet is our homeland. This planet is us, and we are killing it. Why do not we unite our voices against those doers of death? A unique voice that defends the right of a dignified, safe and peaceful life. A unique voice that raises against destruction, death, torture and exiles caused by wars. No one wants to be forced to leave behind his family or friends. No one wants to leave his land, the place of his childhood or deprive his children of it. (Con ilustraciones a color y texto a varios idiomas).
