In this volume, the taxonomy of the diplopod order Polydesmida is extended to three poorly documented areas. A new cave species is described from the Crimea (Ukraine), five new species from Taiwan and seven new species from eastern Australia.

The present special issue contains two richly illustrated papers on the taxonomy and distribution of Asian Paradoxosomatidae, one of the largest families in the millipede order Polydesmida. The first contribution is a revision of the genus Aponedyopus which is obviously endemic to Taiwan and encompasses three species, including two new. The second paper provides a taxonomic review of Tylopus, a large, basically Southeast Asian genus which currently contains 41 species, all keyed, mapped, and mostly restricted to Thailand whence another five new species are being described.

This volume contains three papers on the taxonomy of Diplopoda. The first, larger paper revises the small Oriental family Haplodesmidae, Polydesmoidea, Polydesmida, showing it to be synonymous with Doratodesmidae. Six new species are described, an old one is redescribed, numerous new synonymies and diagnoses are proposed, all six genera recognized as valid a redefined and keyed, as well as all their known constituent species. The second paper is devoted to descriptions of a new aberrant genus and two new species of Dalodesmidae, Dalodesmidea, Polydesmida from Tasmania, Australia. The third article provides the description of a new, northernmost species of a large southern African genus of Spirostreptidae, Spirostreptida from Zumbabwe.

This is the second issue of ZooKeys specially devoted to millipede taxonomy, to appear just a couple of months since the publication of the first issue. It also contains three papers, all beautifully and richly illustrated. The first paper again focuses on the family Haplodesmidae (Polydesmida), this time presenting a review of the rather speciose genus Eutrichodesmus which currently contains 24 species, including nine new, mainly cavernicolous ones from China, Vietnam, Laos and Indonesia. The second contribution provides a review of the large Euro-Mediterranean genus Glomeris in North Africa, with 11 nominate species currently known from the coastal regions of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Lybia. Three new species are described therein, including two cavernicoles, as well as a number of new synonymies established. The third paper revives and reviews Agathodesmus (Haplodesmidae), a small, previously dubious genus now containing four species, including one new from Australia.

Knowledge of deep level phylogenetic relationships within and between many animal groups is currently lacking. Past attempts to reconstruct these ancient evolutionary relationships once relied chiefly on morphological characters and consequently suffered from deficiencies inherent to these data (homoplasy, few diagnostic characters, etc.). Advances in molecular biology over the last 20 years (namely PCR and high-throughput sequencing) have provided a whole other facet of potential characters via a vast array of loci, both nuclear and mitochondrial, which represent unlinked regions spanning entire genomes. The class Diplopoda (the millipedes) is a diverse group, 12,000 described species, which has suffered a long and convoluted taxonomic and systematic history. Containing many overinflated groups (numerous monotypic taxa) while other groups are vastly understudied, the current scheme of classification does not reflect the evolutionary history of the group but instead exists primarily for identification purposes. A classification constructed in such a manner can be characterized as an "unnatural classification". This work represents an attempt to: 1) ascertain the uniformity of millipede taxa at the ordinal level by evaluating species diversity contained in higher taxa (orders, families, genera); 2) achieve a robust and empirically derived estimate of millipede global diversity; 3) reconstruct the higher level relationships among all major millipede taxa using genomic scale molecular data; 4) map the ancestral states of key millipede characteristics; and 5) date the divergences of major diplopod lineages. Full mitochondrial genomes and transcriptomic data obtained via second-generation sequencing for exemplar taxa representing the ordinal taxa were used to reconstruct the relationships between the higher millipede taxa. Our work uncovered interesting and potentially alarming trends in millipede taxonomy. Additionally, we demonstrated the utility, or lack thereof, of using mitochondrial sequence data to reconstruct deep evolutionary relationships. Transcriptomic data analyses yielded well- supported trees containing relationships that have not been suggested previously. The transcriptome-based phylogeny was used to reconstruct the evolutionary changes of key millipede characteristics and, consequently, to assess their utility in delineating millipede taxa. This information provides a basis for future work within the Diplopoda including but not limited to: character evolution, biogeography, divergence time estimations, and comparative genomics.

This issue of ZooKeys celebrates the 75th birthday of Alexandr P. Rasnitsyn, a pioneer in the palaeontology and phylogeny of Hymenoptera, as well as a leader generally in insect systematics and evolution. Born in Moscow, Russia, on 24 September 1936, he developed his passion for Hymenoptera at an early age. After completing his degrees in 1960 he joined the Arthropoda Laboratory in the Paleontological Institute of the USSR (now Russian) Academy of Sciences, Moscow, and worked his way from Technician to the Head of the laboratory, in this capacityÿ leading the most productive group of paleoentomologists for 28 years. He has co-authored and edited several keystone books on insect paleontology and evolution, including History of Insects (2002), the first large-scale work of its kind in English. Rasnitsyn served as the first President of the International Palaeoentomological Society, and was bestowed Honorary Membership by the Russian Entomological Society and in 2008 with the Distinguished Research Medal of the International Society of Hymenopterists. Herein colleagues from around the world have presented original contributions to the systematics of diverse insect orders, living and fossil, as a tribute to this pioneer of Hymenoptera and paleoentomological research. Numerous new taxa are described and their phylogenetic implications explored. A biographical sketch and a list of Rasnitsyn?s more than 360 scientific publications (spanning 52 years) are provided.

Myriapods are the only major zoological group for which a modern encyclopedic treatment has never been produced. In particular, this was the single major gap in the largest zoological treatise of the XIX century (Grassé’s Traité de Zoologie), whose publication has recently been stopped. The two volumes of “The Myriapoda” fill that gap with an updated treatment in the English language. Volume II deals with the Diplopoda or millipedes. As in the previous volume, the treatment is articulated in chapters dealing with external and internal morphology, physiology, reproduction, development, distribution, ecology, phylogeny and taxonomy. All currently recognized suprageneric taxa and a very large selection of the genera are considered. All groups and features are extensively illustrated by line drawings and micrographs and living specimens of representative species of the main groups are presented in color photographs.

With this edition, access to the texts of the famous Traité de Zoologie is now available to a worldwide readership. Parts 1, 2, and 3A of volume VII, i.e., the Crustacea, were published in French in, respectively, 1994, 1996, and 1999. Brill recognized the importance of these books and arranged for a translation to be made. However, some of the manuscripts dated from the early 1980s and it was clear from the beginning that in many fields of biology a mere translation of the existing text would not suffice. Thus, all chapters have been carefully reviewed, either by the original authors or by newly attracted specialists, and adequate updates have been prepared accordingly. This third volume of The Crustacea, revised and updated from the Traité de Zoologie contains chapters on: - Neuroanatomy - Neurohormones - Embryology - Relative Growth and Allometry The volume concludes with a list of contributors, as well as with both taxonomic and subject indices.
