When you understand it properly, the doctrine of vocation—"doing everything for God's glory"—is not a platitude or an outdated notion. This principle that we vaguely apply to our lives and our work is actually the key to Christian ethics, to influencing our culture for Christ, and to infusing our ordinary, everyday lives with the presence of God. For when we realize that the "mundane" activities that consume most of our time are "God's hiding places," our perspective changes. Culture expert Gene Veith unpacks the biblical, Reformation teaching about the doctrine of vocation, emphasizing not what we should specifically do with our time or what careers we are called to, but what God does in and through our callings—even within the home. In each task He has given us—in our workplaces and families, our churches and society—God Himself is at work. Veith guides you to discover God's purpose and calling in those seemingly ordinary areas by providing you with a spiritual framework for thinking about such issues and for acting upon them with a changed perspective.

The exodus of God's chosen Israel is the greatest story of redemption in the Old Testament. In more than 120 Christocentric, devotional meditations on the book of Exodus, Valerius Herberger shows his fervent belief that Jesus Christ is the center of every part of Scripture. Herberger does not seek to give an academic analysis or a grammatical exposition of each passage, but rather to emphasize the life and work of the Son of God. In these meditations the reader will find spiritual and practical applications for every Christian today. Intertwining the words of Scripture and the poetry of the Church's hymnody with his own pastoral insight, Herberger teaches the faith and preaches the truth of salvation in Jesus.

Although the book of Esther contains no direct references to God, his fingerprints can be found all over it. In God Behind the Scenes, Wayne K. Barkhuizen helps us trace the unseen hand of God throughout the Esther narrative, while pointing out how the book is still relevant today. As we walk through the book, we’ll see how God was indeed active in preserving the people through whom the Messiah, Jesus Christ, would one day come.

Benedictine monks and nuns pray the psalms seven times a day, seven days a week. Every week they pray each of the psalms at least once. They do this because St. Benedict required this in his Rule. More importantly, they do it because the psalms are the prayer book of the Church, because they were the prayer book of Jesus. Praying the psalms is a transformative experience. About this book, the author/editor, Fr. Thomas McKenzie, says this: "For many years, I looked for a simple prayer book of the psalms. He wanted a way to pray along with the monks. Not that I think I can always devote that much time to daily prayer (though I'd like to). Rather because I'd like to make the psalms more central to my life of prayer and meditation. However, I was frustrated because I couldn't find the book I needed. So I decided to make one for myself. The project was more involved than I thought it would be. Towards the end of my work, I realized that there might be other people who would benefit from this prayer book. So I've made it available to the world at a low price. I am not the author of this book. I'm not even the one who decided what it would contain. I'm merely the person who laid it out. This really is just the psalms, along with a very few canticles, prayers, and ancient hymns. I chose to use the translations found in the Book of Common Prayer (1979). These translations are in modern language and are designed to be said or sung aloud. I hope it will be a blessing to your life of prayer."
