In the present edition it has been thought desirable, whilst retaining for the most part the original arrangement, to thoroughly revise the whole work, and to entirely re-write some portions of it. A large amount of new matter has been introduced, but it has been found possible to do this, and also to enlarge the Index, without increasing the size of the book, a great deal of what was obsolete or unnecessary in the last edition having been omitted. The enlarged Index will, it is hoped, render reference to the text easier, and add to the usefulness of the present edition.
