In addition, the species list has more than doubled to 474 valid names since Baltazar (1966). The authors hope to spur interest in the study of ants in the Philippines since the ant diversity of many islands is still largely unexplored.

The second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century witnessed important changes in ecology, climate and human behaviour that favoured the development of urban pests.
