The focus of this book is on the impact of politics on language and identity in Hong Kong. The book is the first study to track real time language attitude changes against a divisive political landscape. It is also the most comprehensive study of language attitudes in Hong Kong to date, taking place over four years with over 1600 participants. Through both survey and interview data, a multifaceted portrait of language change in progress is presented, providing a more nuanced and complex view of language and identity than has previously been presented. The book examines the status of Hong Kong English in the light of attitudes towards Cantonese, English, and Putonghua, providing a deeper analysis of the linguistic complexity of Hong Kong; it can be argued that one cannot understand attitudes towards Hong Kong English without fully understanding the status and use of English in Hong Kong today. The book also presents a complex examination of language attitudes in Hong Kong by focusing not only on the what of language attitudes, but also the question of for whom, through an analysis of language attitudes by gender, age, identity, and speaking HKE.

Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Language Attitudes of Hong Kong Students towards English, Cantonese and Putonghua Submitted by Lee Sze Yan for the degree of Master of Arts at The University of Hong Kong in June 2005 This paper aims at investigating the current language attitude towards English, Putonghua and Cantonese among Hong Kong secondary school students and exploring the status and development of English, Putonghua and Cantonese in st Hong Kong in the 21 Century. This study involved 184 Form One to Four students in Hong Kong. The research is quantitative in nature and discusses and analyses the data statistically. The major findings are, firstly, English still enjoys a superior status in Hong Kong after 1997. Secondly, although the popularity of Putonghua has been rising, it has not threatened the superior status of English in Hong Kong and it will not replace English as the dominant language in the foreseeable future. Lastly, Cantonese is used in formal contexts such as meetings in Legislative Council and proceedings in the court in Hong Kong. This indicates that Cantonese will not remain only as a language in the home. Comparing these findings with previous studies of language attitudes in Hong Kong from the 1980s to the 1990s, it seems that the superior status of English in Hong Kong is still maintained. On the other hand, the status of Putonghua and Cantonese in Hong Kong will rise continuously in future. i DOI: 10.5353/th_b3160825 Subjects: English language - Social aspects - China - Hong Kong Cantonese dialects - Social aspects - China - Hong Kong Chinese language - Social aspects - China - Hong Kong High school students - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes

This volume offers a view of the linguistic situation in Hong Kong in the final years of the twentieth century, as it enters the post-colonial era. In the chapters of this book, scholars from Hong Kong and around the world present a contemporary profile of Chinese, English, and other languages in dynamic interaction in this major international economic centre. Authors survey usage of different languages and attitudes towards them among students, teachers, and the general population based on census data, newpapers, language diaries, interviews, and questionnaires. They address issues of code-mixing, the shift from English-medium to Chinese-medium education, the place of Putonghua in the local language mix, and the language of minority groups such as Hong Kong Indians. This wide-ranging group of original studies provides a social and historical perspective from which to consider developments in language among the past, present, and future populations of Hong Kong.

ABSTRACT With the change of sovereignty in 1997 and the rapid development of China in recent years, there appears an increasing need for Hong Kong people to master Putonghua, the National language. English, the language of prestige in Hong Kong throughout the colonial period, seems to be under threat. This paper serves to find out the current status of the two st languages in Hong Kong in the 21 Century. A survey was conducted to find out the language attitudes of Hong Kong people towards English and Putonghua in the current Hong Kong context. Results revealed that respondents continue to hold a favorable attitude towards English and that its prominent status is undeniable because of its indispensable instrumental value. With the rising popularity of Putonghua in the international arena, respondents acknowledged the importance of this national language and most claimed that they would like to learn this language in the future. It is, however, worth noting that respondents seemed to be in favor of Putonghua only for its instrumental value, and not its emotional attachment to the mother country. 6 DOI: 10.5353/th_b2952271 Subjects: Chinese language - China - Hong Kong - Public opinion English language - China - Hong Kong - Public opinion

Essay from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2.7, , course: Introduction to Sociolinguistics, language: English, abstract: Language is neutral but with social factors will become significant to people’s background and their impression to others. Different gender, socioeconomic status, as well as religion will have different language choices and language preference, so-called language attitude. Apart from these reason, nationality is also an influential variable. Language is divided into superiority and inferiority such as English is the most popular and people are eager to learn. Because of military power, economy, and international status if its adapted countries, it acts as lingua franca that mean a common medium of communication for the speakers from different countries. It indicated that people tend to choose advanced countries’ language. Nonetheless, this is just an observation to English by sociologist. This research was designated to study the feelings and perceptions of people towards some rare and strange languages, like Kanuri and Welsh. Supposedly, Kanuri that used in Nigeria would not be welcomed so much by people while Welsh that used in United Kingdom would be positively thought by others. Then, through the pattern of interviewees’ description on the languages, and the contrast of interviewees’ reaction after letting them know the origin of the languages, one of discussion in this research that was to find whether the reputation of countries affect people’s perception of the languages would be revealed. Also, this research would like to study the relationship between the degree of acceptance of various language of the interviewees and the number of acquired languages besides the biliteracy and trilingualism in Hong Kong.

Just about everyone seems to have views about language. Language attitudes and language ideologies permeate our daily lives. Our competence, intelligence, friendliness, trustworthiness, social status, group memberships, and so on, are often judged from the way we communicate. Even the speed at which we speak can evoke reactions. And we often try to anticipate such judgements as we communicate. In this lively introduction, Peter Garrett draws upon research carried out over recent decades in order to discuss such attitudes and the implications they have for our use of language, for social advantage or discrimination, and for social identity. Using a range of examples that includes punctuation, words, grammar, pronunciation, accents, dialects and languages, this book explores the intricate and fascinating ways in which language influences our everyday thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
