"Until 2004 and the publication of ""A Short History of Boston,"" there was no good short history of the city of Boston, not in print anyway. With economy and style, Dr. Robert Allison brings Boston history alive, from the Puritan theocracy of the seventeenth century to the Big Dig of the twenty-first. His book includes a wealth of illustrations, a lengthy chronology of the key events in four centuries of Boston history, and twenty short profiles of exceptional Bostonians, from founder John Winthrop to heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan, from ""heretic"" Anne Hutchinson to Russian-American author Mary Antin. Says the Provincetown Arts, ""A first-rate short history of the city, lavishly illustrated, lovingly written, and instantly the best book of its kind."" "

Excerpt from Boston The original authorities on which I have relied in writing this brief history of Boston, are enumerated in Chapter XII. of my "Short History of the English Colonies in America," published in 1881, from which I have ventured to borrow two passages for the chapter in this volume on Boston in the Provincial period. In addition to the sources used before, I have now been able to draw also upon Sewall's Diary, which has been printed since 1881, and which is the most important contemporary authority on Colonial Massachusetts. My largest debt, however, and it is one which I desire to acknowledge in the fullest manner, is to the "Memorial History of Boston," each chapter of which was written by a specialist, and the whole edited with the utmost thoroughness and research by Mr. Justin Winsor. I wish also to take this opportunity to thank my friend Mr. Brander Matthews for many kind suggestions, and for the interest he has shown in the preparation of this volume. Quirky and little-known true stories of one of America’s most historic cities. Boston may play a big role in American history textbooks, but it also has quite a bit of forgotten past. For example, during the colonial era, riotous mobs celebrated their hatred of the pope in an annual celebration called Pope’s Night. In 1659, Christmas was made illegal, a ban by the Puritans that remained in effect for twenty-two years. William Monroe Trotter published the Boston Guardian, an independent African American newspaper, and was a beacon of civil rights activism at the turn of the century. And in more recent times, a centuries-long turf war played out on the streets of quiet Chinatown, ending in the massacre of five men in a back alley in 1991. Author and historian Dina Vargo shines a light into the cobwebbed corners of Boston’s hidden history in this riveting read, complete with illustrations.
