D. 1562 to 1874, Vol. 1: Compiled From Authentic Sources and Edited With Biographical Notices Among the most opulent and large-hearted men of this class was a member of the Merchant Taylors' Company, Sir Thomas White, who had given ample proof of his zeal in the cause of education by founding, in 1557, St. John's College, in the University of Oxford. It is far from being improbable that either to him or to some other member of the Court may have occurred the idea of establishing in London a Grammar School which should bear the same relation to the newly-founded College which the twin foundations of William Of Wykeham already bore to one another.
