Excerpt from A Primer on Explosives for Coal Miners, Vol. 255 The accidents resulting from the improper use of explosives in mining can be most certainly prevented (1) through the use of the best and safest explosives; (2) through the handling and firing of these explosives in the safest manner by carefully selected and trained men; and (3) through the strict and competent oversight of these men. This little book on explosives is published in the hope that it may aid in preventing such accidents. The aim has been to tell what explosives are and how they should be handled, with a view to greater safety; and to do this in language free of unnecessary technicalities. It has been prepared by Charles E. Munroe, con sulting chemist, and Clarence Hall, explosives engineer of the Bureau of Mines. It has been revised in the light of suggestions made by the mining engineers associated with the bureau, by several mine managers, by experts associated with the manufacture of explosives, and by Col. B. W. Dunn, chief of the bureau for the safe transporta tion of explosives, who has also kindly added a brief chapter on the transportation of explosives. Much of the information in this primer has been obtained from experiments conducted by the technologic branch Of the United States Geological Survey at the mining experiment station at Pitts burg, Pa. This station, which is now part of the Bureau of Mines, was authorized for conducting investigations as to the causes of mine explosions. These investigations have shown the recent development of a new type of short-flame explosives, which can be used with greater safety than black powder in mines where there is dangerous gas or inflammable dust, because the flame from the explosion of black powder lasts from to times as long as does the flame from these newer explosives, and is therefore more likely to ignite the gas or dust in such mines. Excerpt from A Primer on Explosives for Metal Miners and Quarrymen Information about the different explosives used in coal mining and the precautions to be taken in using those explosives has been printed in Bulletin 17 and other bureau reports, the names of which may be found at the end of this bulletin. The bureau has not been able to give much attention to explosives used in metal mines and quarries, but has published some information about these explosives in Bulletin 48, The Selection of Explosives Used in Engineering and Mining Operations; Technical Paper 17, The Effect of Stemming on the Efficiency of Explosives; and Miners' Circular The Prevention of Accidents from Explosives in Metal Mining. Excerpt from Dictionary of Explosives In France and Belgium also the compositions of the coal mine explosives are published, but in Germany, as a rule, only a list of the constituents is given, and sometimes an upper or lower limit for one or more of the principal constituents. Moreover, it is not stated explicitly whether the explosives are intended for use in coal mines or for general blasting purposes. In the United States of America, explosives in tended for use in coal mines are examined by the Bureau of Mines, which, however, has no power to prevent the use of others because regulations on this matter are made by the individual states. If they pass they are placed on the list of Permissible Explosives. The compositions are not published, but the class of composition is stated. Until the second half of the nineteenth century, gunpowder was practically the only explosive used on a considerable scale, and it was employed for all purposes. Consequently it does not fall into any of the classes mentioned, or rather it could be placed in several of them.
