Excerpt from A Nurse's Life in War and Peace The charm of these letters, it will at once be found, depends upon their simplicity, their artlessness, their obvious candour. They present a plain, untinted account of a nurse's career, of the difficulties she has to face, and the problems she has to solve. Those who wish to know something of a nurse's life and times will find in this writing a convincing narrative, unemotional and matter-of-fact. This is no small merit, since the record of nursing experiences is apt to be blurred by exaggeration or made nauseous by sickly romance. There is pathos enough in the sick-room and in the presence of death, but those who come in touch with it would do better to hush the knowledge in their hearts, rather than to proclaim it on the house-tops. Apart from this, the world must be a little weary of the astute sick child who lisps melodrama into the ear of the "kind nurse," as well as of the bizarre aphorisms of the dying tramp. The faults of management and lapses of discipline which crop up incidentally in the story are now matters of the past, and are no longer to be found in either the "Children's Hospital" or the "General." The novice who is entering the profession of Nursing will find in these letters a sensible and exact view of the prospect that lies before her. Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Life of a Nurse in Field, Hospital and Camp: During the Civil War This little book of woman's work and what she can do if she makes up her mind to do it, should be placed in the hands of every school child. It will teach them loyalty to themselves and their country, and they will grow up to respect the heroes of our wars. To-day, the heads of the soldiers of North and South are carrying the same color, the gray, while the nimble footsteps are growing weary and soon taps will be sounded for them all. May it be well with them when the time comes. My ancestors were the early settlers of Pennsylvania, Dutch on one side. Huguenot on the other. I was born in one of the finest valleys of the United States, the Cumberland, but I lived and was educated in the city of Harrisburg. How many people of to-day can recall the Omen of War just before it broke out. I was coming home, with a party, from Camp Meeting, and such an awe-stricken party as it was. I confess here, for once in my life I was afraid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from War Nursing: A d104-Book for the Auxiliary Nurse With the largest part of the civilized world at war, millions of men in the fighting lines, every day bringing thousands of freshly wounded and sick, women everywhere are eager to help their country and their men. Nursing the wounded has been woman's work ever since the world began, and it is an essentially womanly work. The modern woman recognizes the need of training for war nursing, the more so that in this war medical science and surgical skill have developed to a point where special knowledge is absolutely requisite. Thousands of women, not hospital trained, have tried to prepare themselves to be of assistance in war nursing. Many of them have taken short, practical courses of one sort or another. With them all there has been a constant demand for a text-book of nursing as applied to war; more, a book on nursing as applied to this war.
