Glee Pembroke has turned down countless offers of marriage because she has secretly been in love with her brother's best friend, Gregory Blankenship, all her life. When she learns Gregory will lose his considerable fortune if he's not wed by his twenty-fifth birthday, she persuades him to enter into a sham marriage with her. What he doesn't know is that she plans to win his heart. She will do everything in her power to make him happy - including mimicking the ways of a "fast" woman since he's noted for alliances with women of that sort. Why did he ever allow himself to marry the maddening Glee? He'd thought they would have great fun, but at every turn, she exasperates him. Why does she persist in wearing the bodice of her dresses so blasted low? Why do other men persist in flirting with her, his wife? And why in the blazes has his heretofore complacent life been turned upside down by this sham marriage? He finds himself longing for a real marriage, but for reasons he cannot divulge, that can never happen.

The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 changed the way the world thinks about security. Everyday citizens learned how national security, international politics, and the economy are inextricably linked to business continuity and corporate security. Corporate leaders were reminded that the security of business, intellectual, and human assets has a tremendous impact on an organization's long-term viability. In Rethinking Corporate Security, Fortune 500 consultant Dennis Dalton helps security directors, CEOs, and business managers understand the fundamental role of security in today's business environment and outlines the steps to protect against corporate loss. He draws on the insights of such leaders as Jack Welch, Bill Gates, Charles Schwab, and Tom Peters in this unique review of security's evolving role and the development of a new management paradigm. * If you truly wish to improve your own skills, and the effectiveness of your Corporation's security focus, you need to read this book * Presents connections of theory to real-world case examples in historical and contemporary assessment of security management principles * Applies classic business and management strategies to the corporate security management function

On the first day of Francisco de San Antonio's trial before the Spanish Inquisition in Toledo in 1625, his interrogators asked him about his parentage. His real name, he stated, was Abram Rubén, and he had been born in Fez of Jewish parents. How then, Inquisitors wanted to know, had he become a Christian convert? Why had a Hebrew alphabet been found in his possession? And what was his business at the Court in Madrid? "He was asked," according to his dossier, "for the story of his life." His response, more than ten folios long, is one of the many involuntary autobiographies created by the logic of the Inquisition that today provide rich insights into both the personal lives of the persecuted and the social, cultural, and political realities of the age. In the first edition of Inquisitorial Inquiries, Richard L. Kagan and Abigail Dyer collected, translated, and annotated six of these autobiographies from a diverse group of prisoners. Now they add the fascinating life story of another victim of the Inquisition: Esteban Jamete, a French sculptor accused of being a Protestant. Each of the autobiographies has been selected to represent a particular political or social issue, while at the same time raising more intimate questions about the religious, sexual, political, or national identities of the prisoners. Among them are a politically incendiary prophet, a self-proclaimed hermaphrodite, and a morisco, an Islamic convert to Catholicism.

Years after WWII, a pair of veterans believe they’ve spotted a Nazi in disguise, in a thriller with “more surprise turns than most novels twice its length” (Kirkus Reviews). In postwar England, Goldsmith and Templewood see each other once a year at reunions of their regiment. Goldsmith is a local politician now, while Templewood is a gregarious salesman with a taste for the ladies. They lead different lives but have one thing in common: They vividly remember Nikolaus Hebbel of the SS, and they would both like to see him dead. Now they find themselves together, watching a man staying at their hotel in London, checked in under the name Neil Housman. They’re sure he resembles Hebbel—something in the mannerisms, the expression. They ponder whether their memories of twenty years ago are reliable. They follow the man in hopes of confirming his real identity—and finding out what he’s up to. The question is whether they will discover the truth before or after they kill the suspected Nazi war criminal . . . “Reginald Hill delivers literate, complex, and immensely satisfying thrillers.” —Orlando Sentinel “Reginald Hill’s stories must certainly be among the best now being written.” —The Times Literary Supplement
