Improvements in design and the enhancement in performance of aerospace vehicles calls for the development of advanced materials capable of sustaining the increasing loading conditions while maintaining their structural integrity. Special consideration must be given to the behavior of such materials under fatigue loading conditions that dominate the flight regime loads. A micromechanical fatigue damage model for unidirectional metal-matrix composites is proposed. Damage evolution is considered at the constituent level through the application of the Mori-Tanaka averaging scheme. Individual damage criteria for the constituents are proposed and employed to define damage evolution equations for each of the consultants. The numerical results for high cycle fatigue loading are presented for variations in the material and model parameters.

Parameters and models to correlate the cycles to failure of a unidirectional metal matrix composite (SCS-6/Timetal 21S) undergoing thermal and mechanical loading are examined. Three different cycle types are considered: out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue (TMF), in-phase TMF, and isothermal fatigue. A single parameter based on either the fiber or matrix behavior is shown not to correlate the cycles to failure of all the data. Two prediction methods are presented that assume that life may be dependent on at least two fatigue damage mechanisms and therefore consist of two terms. The first method, the linear life fraction model, shows that by using the response of the constituents, the life of these different cycle types are better correlated using two simple empirical relationships: one describing the fatigue damage in the matrix and the other fiber-dominated damage. The second method, the dominant damage model, is more complex but additionally brings in the effect of the environment. This latter method improves the predictions of the effects of the maximum temperature, temperature range, and frequency, especially under out-of-phase TMF and isothermal fatigue. The steady-state response of the constituents is determined using a 1-D micromechanics model with viscoplasticity. The residual stresses due to the CTE mismatch between the fiber and matrix during processing are included in the analysis.

A fatigue damage computational algorithm utilizing a multiaxial, isothermal, continuum-based fatigue damage model for unidirectional metal-matrix composites has been implemented into the commercial finite element code MARC using MARC user subroutines. Damage is introduced into the finite element solution through the concept of effective stress that fully couples the fatigue damage calculations with the finite element deformation solution. Two applications using the fatigue damage algorithm are presented. First, an axisymmetric stress analysis of a circumferentially reinforced ring, wherein both the matrix cladding and the composite core were assumed to behave elastic-perfectly plastic. Second, a micromechanics analysis of a fiber/matrix unit cell using both the finite element method and the generalized method of cells (GMC). Results are presented in the form of S-N curves and damage distribution plots.

Three multiaxial isothermal continuum damage mechanics models for creep, fatigue, and creep/fatigue interaction of a unidirectional metal matrix composite volume element are presented, only one of which will be discussed in depth. Each model is phenomenological and stress based, with varying degrees of complexity to accurately predict the initiation and propagation of intergranular and transgranular defects over a wide range of loading conditions. The development of these models is founded on the definition of an initially transversely isotropic fatigue limit surface, static fracture surface, normalized stress amplitude function and isochronous creep damage failure surface, from which both fatigue and creep damage evolutionary laws can be obtained. The anisotropy of each model is defined through physically meaningful invariants reflecting the local stress and material orientation. All three transversely isotropic models have been shown, when taken to their isotropic limit, to directly simplify to previously developed and validated creep and fatigue continuum damage theories. Results of a nondimensional parametric study illustrate (1) the flexibility of the present formulation when attempting to characterize a large class of composite materials, and (2) its ability to predict anticipated qualitative trends in the fatigue behavior of unidirectional metal matrix composites. This study investigated the residual strength of the unidirectional and cross-ply laminates of SCS-6 / Ti-15-3, metal matrix composite at elevated temperature 427 deg C (800 deg F) after under tension-tension load controlled mode. For this purpose, several specimens were fatigued to various fractions of the fatigue life and then loaded monotonically to failure. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different levels of fatigue damage on the composite's strength. The unidirectional specimens were cycled at a 900 MPa maximum stress at a frequency of 10 Hz, while, the cross-ply specimens were tested at both 300 MPa and 450 MPa at 5 Hz and 10 Hz, respectively. The residual strength results for the three cases showed similar trends in that residual strength drop with cycles was small until near the end of the fatigue life. Both the unidirectional and cross-ply specimens demonstrated only a small drop of the residual strength with cycles until near the end of the fatigue life. (Author)
