Excerpt from A History of Theatrical Art, Vol. 6: In Ancient and Modern Times; Classicism and Romanticism In closing my book at this point, however, I am not merely actuated by the consideration that everything must come to an end. My chief reason is that, if my work has been properly done, these six volumes should serve as a description of the whole foundation on which modern theatrical art is based. Historic completeness has not been attempted in this book; it has not been the author's aim to produce a work of reference in which the names of all actors and of all theatres are to be found. The intention has been to present a picture, mainly from the sociological point of view, of the course of development followed by theatrical art through the ages; and accord ingly only such phenomena have been selected for notice as have in a marked degree furthered - or hampered - that development.
