Excerpt from A History of Minnesota, Vol. 4 of 4 The introduction to the first volume of this work an nounced that a general bibliography would be included in the final volume. On further consideration, however, in View of the inclusion of complete bibliographical information with the first reference in each volume to each work cited, it seemed that the principal object of such a bibliography would be achieved by listing the works in the consolidated index, printed in this volume, with references to the first citations. Undoubtedly a systematic bibliography of Minnesota his tory would be very useful, but there is no special reason why it should be included in this work. All manuscripts and newspapers cited, unless otherwise indicated, will be found in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society. These include, in the Folwell Papers turned over to the society by the author and his family, correspondence and records of interviews with many persons who possessed first-hand in formation. Excerpt from A History of Minnesota, Vol. 1 of 4 During his presidency at the university Dr. Folwell not only laid broad and firm foundations for that institution but also took the lead in promoting the development of high schools and in building up a unified system of public educa tion in the state. The establishment of the Minnesota Geological and Natural History Survey in 1872 was also a result of his foresight and initiative. After his resignation from the presidency of the university in 1884. Dr. Folwell rendered notable services to that institution as professor of political science and as librarian until his retirement in 1907. His in uence, however, was by no means confined to scholastic matters. He could always be counted on to aid in any movement for the advancement of culture and the public welfare. Thus he was one of the founders of the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts and served as its president from 1869 to 1884; from 1888 to 1906 he was an active mem ber of the Minneapolis park commission; and from 1896 to 1902 he served on the state board of charities and correc tions. Most of the scenic ground had become familiar to me through frequent visita tions before the thought of writing this outline entered my mind. Since then, no opportunity for exploration has been thrown away. It has been of inestimable profit, also, to meet and converse with many of the historic characters, some of whom have since passed to their rest without leaving any written records. Moreover, throughout my labor, I have had free access to the rich collections of the Minnesota Historical Society.
