Excerpt from A History of English Literature In writing this book the author has sought to lay stress on the facts of the history of English literature, rather than on the interpretation of it. The need of the high school pupil would seem to be, first of all, the chief facts, given in a continuous lrnportant movements, so far as is possible, told in terms ot/'n'ien rather than of ideas. Though A certain amount 'of aesthetic comment, implied if not is'tated, is inevitable in any survey of literature which is more than a dictionary of names, the intention of the present writer has been to place the emphasis on men, on what they did, and on how they came to do it - not on what the world thinks of their performance. By such a method the space gained is considerable; there are important facts which cannot be included in a small volume if it is half-full of interpretation. Excerpt from History of English Literature This study of the great writers is concise enough to give readers ample time to fall in love with the treasures of English literature. It is better to read and enjoy one play or one poem than to read many books about the play or the poem. A taste for good books exalts the meaning of everyday events, and it gives courage in life's battle. Certainly literature is most practical. Excerpt from History of English Literature, Vol. 1 of 2 Among the last acts of his life were his reading of my ms., and his instructions to his colleague about some alterations or kindly suggestions for the improvement of my text. But almost all the changes my version experienced were practically made by his own hand. In this paternal oversight I have cause for self-congratulation, for not every translator is so fortunate. I also received Professor Ten Brink's authority to make enlargements, extra foot-notes, a new arrangement of the paragraphs, or whatever else I might consider helpful in bring ing the work more closely home to his English and American readers, on whose appreciation he set great value. But I have naturally refrained from making much use of such flattering confidence; any changes or additions are duly noted where they occur. Besides the author's critical revision of my text, many of the proof sheets have been read by experienced students of English Literature, which has frequently resulted in a greater clearness of diction. Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Inevitably, however, Christianity, with its refining, softening influence, encroached upon the traditions of pagan poetry. Stories from the Bible and episodes from the lives of the saints began to compete with stories from the heroic past. Excerpt from History of English Literature: In a Series of Biographical Sketches Books into the framework formed by the accession of om Sovereigns, I have adopted a purely literary division. Selecting such great landmarks as the Birth of Chaucer, and the Introduction of Printing, I find that Ten Eras, each possessing a very distinct character, will embrace every name of note, from the oldest Celtic bards to Tennyson and Carlyle. The pre-english Era takes a rapid view of British books and book-makers before the birth of Chaucer, about whose day the true English Literature began to exist. In the nine remaining Eras an entire chapter is devoted to each greatest name, writers of less mark being grouped together in a closing section. Short illustrative specimens, intended mainly to form the basis of lessons on variety of style, are appended to all the leading lives. Since names that cannot be passed over grow very thick towards the end, the closing chapters of the last two Eras have been arranged upon a plan which prevents confusion, and, by the use of Supplement ary Lists, admits the mention of many authors who must otherwise have been left out. The method of the entire book aims at enabling a student to perceive at a glance the relative importance of certain authors, so that his reading may be either confined to the lives of our great Classics, or extended through the full range of our Literature, without much risk of confusion or mistake as to proportionate great ness.
