These Historical Novels have taught all men this truth, which looks like a truism, and yet was as good as unkwon to writers of history and others, till so taught: that the bygone ages of the world were actually filled by living men, not by protocols, state-papers, controversies, and abstractions of men.

Excerpt from A Guide to the Best Historical Novels and Tales There is a justifiable feeling against superfluous prefaces, and the fact that this little volume is entering the third stage of its existence might appear to suggest that the time had gone by for explanations. In the present instance, however, when something like a new book is offered, an extra word or two may not be altogether out of place. Excerpt from A Guide to Historical Fiction Tales, has written an able defence of the reading of this kind of romance, to which I have little to add except by the way of emphasis. Historical fiction is not history, but it is often better than history. A fine historical painting, a pageant, or a play, may easily teach more and carry a deeper impression than whole Chapters of description and analysis. Esmond and Tom fones are indispensable adjuncts to Lecky. Scott and Dumas will always have a larger history class than any two regular historians you could name. Even a second-rate historical novel may have ample excuse for existence. But a good one - good, that is, merely as a story - though chronology may be at fault and facts inaccurately stated, will probably succeed in making a period live in the imagination when text-books merely give us dry bones. Excerpt from History in Fiction: A Guide to the Best Historical Romances, Sagas, Novels, and Tales It is hoped that the arrangement Of the books by the country and date of the subject, with the appendix at the foot Of the page giving contem porary or nearly contemporary stories when such are available, will prove of use to lecturers, teach ers and students, and also to the general reader who may perhaps be induced by reading a group Of novels about a period, a man, or an event, to take a more serious interest in history. Some Of the works included lie very near the borderland Of history and romance, if not right on the other side. Many of the Icelandic sagas, for instance, are substantially history, though cast by the drama tic instinct oi the chronicler in an artistic mould. Much the same must be said Of several of Defoe's narratives. But the principle Of inclusion has been simply this: when in doubt, it is better to leave in than turn out. The entries of books have been made approximately according to the chronological order of succession of the chief events or the periods dealt with but this arrange ment is Of course not more than approximate, exactness being practically unattainable. Every effort has been made to fix the dates Of the period with which each work is concerned; but, as can well be imagined, with such an irresponsible Class Of literature as historical romance, this has been a difficult and deceptive task, and it is as well to apologize for inevitable inaccuracies beforehand. Book Excerpt: ... Readers of "John Inglesant" may be reminded that in his interesting preface Mr. Shorthouse alludes to William Smith's philosophical novel--"Thorndale." As a picture of Thought developments in the early Victorian period, the latter work has special historical interest for the philosophical and theological student; in this respect it may be likened to Pater's "Marius the Epicurean," which vividly reproduces the Intellectual ferment of an earlier age. "Thorndale," however, is primarily didactic, and the philosophical dialogues (interesting as these are to the metaphysician) hardly atone to the general reader for an almost entire absence of plot. The above is, doubtless, an altogether extreme instance, but the exclusion of several other works from the category of Romance seems to follow on something like the same grounds. Becker's "Charicles" and "Gallus" are little more than school textbooks, while, turning to a less scholarly quarter, Ainsworth's "Preston Fight," and even his better-known ...
