Very many of the poems herein contained have been prepared by request and for some particular occasion. Others were composed impromptu, and in this category are "The Old Pipe;" "Goodbye, Old Town;" "Don't Call Me a Cripple," "A New Year's Vision," Etc., Etc. Several of these poems were written at a time when the author was so nearly blind that he was unable to read his own manuscript, and the result has been that their construction is unsatisfactory even to the author himself.
