Excerpt from d104 Book of a Course of Lectures, on the Theory and Practice of Physic, Vol. 2: For the Use of the Medical Students of Harvard University As 'the first part of this text book relates to the general theory of medicine, this second part may. Be considered as relating to the practice. This distinction 19 made, however, rather 1n reference to the title of the professorship I hold, and to the duties belonging to it, than to the exact character of the two parts of the work. The second palt is represented as relating to practice, because it will describe particular diseases, and the treatment adapted to each; yet it will admit and require many theoretical discussions. Excerpt from Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Physic IN yielding to the wish of the publishers that he would become annotator to the Lectures of Doctor Stokes, and make additions on subjects not included in the course of the distinguished lecturer in the Park Street Medical School, the editor was not unmindful of the responsibility of his task, nor of the comparisons to which his labours would be subjected by critical readers. Mere self-regard would have made him prefer to be the author of a separate work on the Practice of Medicine; in which scope would have been allowed him for various topics necessarily omitted on the present occasion. But he was consoled by the reflexion, that, next to the pleasure of original promulgation of sound precepts Of doctrine and practice by oneself, is that of bearing corroborative testimony to emanations ofthis nature from another person.
