Excerpt from A Concordance To The Works Of Horace This Concordance of Horace was planned in May, 1913; the quota tions were recorded and collected in June and July of that year; the alphabetical ordering was carried on at intervals during the autumn, and finished early in the following spring; the work was accepted for publication by the Carnegie Institution on May 21, 1914. I had hoped to complete the proof-reading with dispatch, but various other demands upon my scanty leisure, and a threatening eye - strain which supervened, have delayed the progress of the volume through the press; for with all advantages and facilities the task of editing the 593 pages of a Latin concordance could not be a light one. Yet the aid that came from friends and pupils of mine at the outset made it possible to produce the work in a relatively brief time.
