Excerpt from A Concise History of Religion, Vol. 3 Is there, then, a dark chamber here, too, which we are afraid to examine - into which we dare not suffer the light of day to enter? So Colenso asked of the orthodox critics who, when he exposed the human and fallible authorship of the Old Testament, expressed alarm lest he should carry his method into the region of Christianity. In the present instalment of the History I have penetrated the dark chamber, and at least left the door ajar by which that influential person, the General Reader, may enter. He who has neither leisure, desire, nor opportunity to search the books catalogued at the close of the volume may secure a bird's-eye view of the main results of modern criticism of early Christianity and its literature. As in the previous volume on Judaism, so now, I have attempted to show the religious process in conjunction with the course of political events and with the march of secular literature. For religion forms part of sociology, and the story of the Church connects itself intimately with the life of the world at large. Excerpt from History of the Church, Vol. 3 of 3 WE take pleasure in congratulating Rev. Doctor Pubisch, President of St. Mary's Seminary, and Rev. Thomas S. Byrne, on the completion of their great work, the translation into English of the Manual of Universal Church History, by Rev. Dr. John Alzog, Professor of Theology in the University of Freiburg, Brisgan, Baden. The Additions and Notes appended to this confessedly great work by our American translators give it, in the judgment of Catholic and non-catholic readers and scholars, a character of originality, and stamp it as worthy of taking rank with the best produc tions on the important subject of which it treats, and of sup plying a want which, we say it with due reverence, our best historians, or biographers, or hagiographers have, for various reasons and circumstances, left unsatisfied. Excerpt from Five Centuries of Religion, Vol. 3: Getting and Spending MY first duty is to express sincere gratitude to the electors on the Ford Foundation at Oxford, by whose invitation part of this book was delivered in lectures during the Michaelmas term of 1930. Next, I must warn readers that much in this and the next volume may lend itself to misapprehension unless my Intro duction and my concluding pages (596 - 9) are followed with some care. Only thus will they realize what the author has set out to attempt, and be able to judge how far he has succeeded.
