If you are intending to start your journey of learning Modern Standard Arabic or still stuck in some stages without mastering both Arabic script and pronunciation, then this book is the key to unlock the doors towards the next stages. As English speaker, whether you are native or not, you will be amazed how English and Arabic overlap in a wide area in terms of sounds, and you will be impressed how regular the Arabic spelling is, which will make the process of learning pronunciation -at least at the level of recognition- very straightforward. Knowing that recognition is part of ultimate learning, this book will cover the common area of sounds between English and Arabic using the Arabic letters and International Phonetic Alphabet when no English equivalent is available. As for those sounds that are not in English, articulation strategies and techniques are clearly illustrated and precisely explained. At the End of this book, you will find both recognition and acquisition exercises, for you to practice what you have learned along the way. The goal of this book is to make you a Romanization-free Arabic learner, which will give the freedom to look up any Arabic text out there.

This is a revolutionary approach by an experienced, innovative teacher. There are no canned ideas copied from internet websites here. Everything is this guide, all the techniques, strategies, teaching tips, and practice exercises, evolved from decades of experience teaching Arabic speaking students of English. They are a result of years of trial and error, collegial conversation (and debate), and extensive research. This guide outlines the interference points between Arabic and English. Some of them are vowel and consonant sounds, and others are related to syllable stress, word stress, and intonation. There is a big difference in the function of vowels in our two languages and the role they play in defining words, stress patterns, rhythm and tone. Once you understand how American English and Arabic sound systems compare, you'll know where the two converge, and diverge. It's the areas of divergence that need attention, and that is what is covered in this guide.TOPICS INCLUDED: Comparing Arabic and English vowel and consonant systemsStrategies for teaching English vowels and consonantsComparing the structure of Arabic and English wordsSoundprints! This Handbook of writing and pronunciation is the fruit of several years’ teaching the Arabic language at the United Nations Office in Geneva and interaction with students from fifty different countries, i.e. from different religions cultures, and linguistic origins. It is the collection of lessons prepared to reply specifically to the immediate needs of each student, taking especially into consideration his or her language of origin. The Arabic alphabet contains several letters and sounds which do not exist in other languages. Learners differentiate between them with difficulty and often confuse them. Among the languages which use the Arabic alphabet, there are several letters which are written and pronounced differently, as in Persian, Urdu or Pashto. This is why, whatever the language of origin of the learner, I insist on good handwriting and good pronunciation from the very beginning. In these languages, there are also words of Arabic origin, but they have different meanings. This is also true for other languages which do not use the Arabic alphabet but which are influenced by Islam, such as Malay and Wolof, or by Arab-Islamic civilisation, such as Maltese and Spanish. To know a language is to know the mentality, the way of thinking and of expressing himself, the customs, and the life style of the person who speaks that language. It is never possible to know and understand a people without knowing its language; through studying the language, you can identify with the people and even come to love them. This book is not a treatise on comparative linguistics. However, instead of dealing only with the languages which use the Arabic alphabet, I refer to other languages, since I find that there are common features which every student of Arabic must know, whatever his language of origin, whether or not it uses the Arabic alphabet.
