Most attempts to generalize about photography as a medium run up against our experience of the photographs themselves. We live with photos and cameras every day, and philosophies of the photographic image do little to shake our intimate sense of how we produce photographs and what they mean to us. In this book that is equal parts memoir and intellectual and cultural history, French writer Roger Grenier contemplates the ways that photography can change the course of a life, reflecting along the way on the history of photography and its practitioners. Unfolding in brief, charming vignettes, A Box of Photographs evokes Grenier’s childhood in Pau, his war years, and his working life at the Gallimard publishing house in Paris. Throughout these personal stories, Grenier subtly weaves the story of a lifetime of practicing and thinking about photography and its heroes—Henri Cartier-Bresson, Weegee, Alfred Eisenstaedt, George Brassaï, Inge Morath, and others. Adding their own insights about photography to the narrative are a striking range of writers, thinkers, and artists, from Lewis Carroll, Albert Camus, and Arthur Schopenhauer to Susan Sontag, Edgar Degas, and Eugène Delacroix. Even cameras themselves come to life and take on personalities: an Agfa accompanies Grenier on grueling military duty in Algeria, a Voigtlander almost gets him killed by German soldiers during the liberation of Paris, and an ill-fated Olympus drowns in a boating accident. Throughout, Grenier draws us into the private life of photographs, seeking the secrets they hold for him and for us. A valedictory salute to a lost world of darkrooms, proofs, and the gummed paper corners of old photo albums, A Box of Photographs is a warm look at the most honest of life’s mirrors.

Fifi, the hero of our story is an 8 year old boy that, like most children, loves story time. We meet Fifi getting ready for story time but huffing and puffing about sleeping in his parent’s room! His parent’s insist that he sleep in their room because Fifi sleepwalks, this way they can keep an eye on him in case he wanders off at night when he should be in bed. While waiting for his father to come up to tell him a story he falls asleep, and as often happens, Fifi begins to sleepwalk. He manages to slip out of the house without his parent’s knowledge and make his way down to the village/town centre. His parents discover Fifi is gone and begin to panic! Private First Class R was an excellent soldier so it was unlike him to be late. When he came in a few minutes later I could see by the grim look on his face that something was terribly wrong. He immediately began to cry and tell me that his wife had miscarried the child they had so badly wanted. I had never seen anyone cry as much as he did that morning and one box of tissues simply was not enough. After a while, the front of his uniform was soaked from his many tears, and I felt horrible seeing him suffer. It was one of those times when I would have moved Heaven and Earth if I could have but I could not. It humbled me because I wanted to order someone to do something to fix the problem, but this time it would not be that simple. I had always taken pride in looking out for the welfare of the soldiers in my charge but this time was different; I knew I was not a miracle worker but I felt I had let him down because as much as I wanted to, I did not have the power to bring back his baby. It was the worst day of my Army career because a good soldier who looked up to me for wisdom and guidance was in peril, and there was nothing I could do. I felt like a weakened Superman hopelessly dragging his feet through a field of Kryptonite, because there I was with all my rank and power that the Army had entrusted in me, but I was useless to him.

Long regarded as an undervalued and marginalised genre, the short story is undergoing a renaissance. The Short Story celebrates its unique appeal. Practitioners and scholars address the issues facing short story criticism in the 21st century. Author A.L. Kennedy shares the pleasures and frustrations of writing the short story in the literary marketplace. This is followed by an assessment of recent attempts to promote short story readership in the UK. Other contributors look at forms such as the short-short and the short story sequence. The range of authors discussed includes Martin Amis, Anita Desai, Salman Rushdie and James Joyce. The short story is the most international of genres; this is reflected in chapters on Jorge Luis Borges and Italo Calvino and on Japanese short fiction. Postcolonial and translation theory are combined with the close reading of specific texts. Neglected authors, such as the Welsh writer Dorothy Edwards and the colonial figure Frank Swettenham, are re-evaluated and we also consider genre writing, with chapters on crime fiction and Ray Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles. Integrating theory and practice, The Short Story will appeal both to writers and to students of literary criticism.
