Excerpt from A Bibliographical, Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in the Northern Counties of England and in Scotland, Vol. 2 We were now then at Dumfries. During and after dinner, I made attacks upon the whiskey in every possible direction: with and without aqueous dilu tion - with and without saccharine infusion: but to no purpose. Disguise thyself as thou wilt, still, whiskey, still thou art a bitter draught. With or without sugar, or water - hot or cold - still thou art brimstone and fire to-day, and fire and brimstone to-morrow. As it was my first, so it was my last, experiment upon this generally seductive liquor with the Scotch. In the everlasting toddgj-potations at Glasgow, I could never be brought to hear my part in brandishing a ladle or emptying a rummer. Even its infusion into the plmc/z-bowl there, though that how] came fresh and foaming from the cunning hand of the good Joseph Hunter, Esq. - even then, Substitute slavery for whiskey, and the quotation is from Sterne. They place very small bottles or decanters of this liquor by the side of a glass, before you; and I believe sixpence will supply you with a portion sufficient to make your head ache for a week. It is poetically called mountain new! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Observations, Relative Chiefly to Picturesque Beauty, Made in the Year 1776, on Several Parts of Great Britain, Vol. 2: Particularly the High-Lands of Scotland Their fituation alfo upon the lake Operated as another caufe, to imprefs the idea of grandeur. Nothing exalts the dignity of a mountain fo much, as it's rifing from the water's edge. In meafuring it, as it appears connected with the ground, the eye knows not where to begin, but continues creeping up in quelt of a bath, till half the mountain is loft. But a water-line prevents this am biguity 5 and to the height of the mountain even adds the edging at the bottom, which naturally belongs, not to It. Thus the moun tain of Doniquaick, - feen from the new Inn at Inverary, appears as if It rofe from the water's edge, tho in fact the duke of Argyle's lawn intervenes, all which the mountain ap propriates: and tho it meafures only eight hundred and thirty - five feet, it has a more refpee'cable appearance, than many mountains Of twiceit's height unconnected with, water.
